Looks

Currently in its first generation, the Aveo has been sporting the same design for over a decade, and has only undergone minor facelifts since its introduction in 2002. Sporting large headlamps, a chrome grille, triangular tail lamps and flared wheel arches, the Aveo is far from striking. As a matter of fact, it scores quite well on the boooring scale.

mm gal item c2.img resize.img stage. 3 614x345 2015 Chevrolet Aveo | new car review

Feels

Hard plastics on the dashboard, hard plastics on the door panels, and hard plastics on the sun visors; the Aveo is best described as a plastic container. Accompanied by an extremely dated instrument cluster, and rear seats that could qualify as being orthopedic for how stiff they are, I wonder why the Aveo is still seen on the showroom floor.

2008 chevrolet aveo dashboard1 614x434 2015 Chevrolet Aveo | new car review

Engineering

Although the Aveo is far from bursting with standard equipment, it does pack in some neat features. With four speakers, a USB port, and a CD player with MP3 capability as standard equipment, the economical Chevy manages to cover its driver and passengers' music needs at the least.

What's on offer?

The 2015 Chevrolet Aveo is equipped with a 1.4 litre engine under the hood that sends 100 horsepower and 130 Nm of torque through a 4 speed automatic transmission to the front wheels. According to Chevrolet, the Aveo will deliver 100 kilometers in exchange for 7.3 liters of fuel. Quite frankly, that seems a bit steep for a measly 1.4 litre engine.

Summing it…

Apart from the abundance of head and leg room in the rear seats, the Aveo seriously hasn't got anything going for it. With competition from the Korean's heating up on a daily basis, the Aveo doesn't stand a chance in front of the aesthetically and technically advanced Korens.

Looks

From the exterior, it is evident that the designers at Hyundai spent more time and thought when designing the i20, as opposed to its sibling, the i10. The 2015 i20 flaunts numerous lines and creases along the body particularly along its hood and the length of the vehicle. A horizontal line running along the side of the car that gets distinctively more prominent towards the end, gives the impression that the i20 is a lot longer than it really is.

hw038178 614x368 2015 Hyundai i20 | new car review

Feels

Certain aspects of the interior in the 2015 Hyundai i20 are rather neat, while others are flat out tacky. Although plastic has been used generously all over the interior, Hyundai has had a little fun when designing the dashboard and as a result the clock sits in a sculpted den facing the driver. On the other hand, the large chrome piece on top of the shifter lever looks and feels extremely cheap. Leg and headroom in the rear seats are ample and headrests for rear passengers are a plus point, something that was missing in the i10.

hw038164 614x368 2015 Hyundai i20 | new car review

Engineering

With audio controls on the steering wheel, push button start, fully automatic air conditioning and a 6 way driver seat, the i20 brings an impressive amount of kit to the table, all for just AED 46,900.

hw038179 614x368 2015 Hyundai i20 | new car review

What's on offer?

The 2015 Hyundai i20 is available with just one engine option – a 1.4 litre 4-cylinder unit. Producing 99 horsepower and 136 Nm of torque, the little Korean gets mated to a 4 speed automatic transmission and accelerates to a 100 km/h in a pedestrian 11.6 seconds.

hw038161 614x368 2015 Hyundai i20 | new car review

Summing it…

With a price tag ranging from AED 42,900 to AED 46,900, the Hyundai i20 is better looking than its rivals, the Mitsubishi Mirage and Nissan Micra. Unfortunately, it is also more expensive, and that is what will prevent potential buyers from even considering it when in the market a hatchback.

2015 Hyundai i30 | new car review - AutoMiddleEast.com

Posted: 26 Oct 2014 04:51 AM PDT

Looks

Sophisticated, modern, and extravagant to look at. This petite hatchback has a lot to say about itself. The designers thought of everything for the 2015 Hyundai i30 with the front arching grille almost connecting to the aggressive eyelids that house massive Xenon lights. The rear maintains the styling points with its sharp edges and wide rear window. It is without a doubt, one of the prettiest hatchbacks out there.

hw035783 614x368 2015 Hyundai i30 | new car review

Feels

The interior is plain and dare we say, a little boring, when compared to the exterior. The rear seats can fit 3 people better than most hatchbacks since it's wider and the middle seat has an almost flat transmission tunnel making fighting for foot space with your fellow passengers a thing of the past. The boot has one of the largest storage capacities in its class and rear seats fold down completely flat for larger items. One neat feature is the glove box that is chilled by the A/C to keep your drinks cool.

hw035790 614x368 2015 Hyundai i30 | new car review

Engineering

With a plethora of equipment being offered as standard, there's just a panoramic roof and rear arm rest that differentiates one variant, from the other. Fog lamps, Bluetooth connectivity, steering controls, six speakers, and a rear wiper are all standard affair.

hw035786 614x368 2015 Hyundai i30 | new car review

What's on offer?

For AED 52,900, you can get your hands on the 1.6 litre variant, which puts out 128 horsepower at 6,300 RPM and 157 Nm of torque at 4,850 RPM. If you're willing to shell out AED 57,900, you not only get the panoramic roof and rear cup holders, but a stronger 1.8 litre engine too, which kicks at 148 horsepower at 6,500 RPM and 178 Nm of torque at 4,850 RPM.

hw035788 614x368 2015 Hyundai i30 | new car review

Summing it…

The 2015 Hyundai i30 is stylish, practical, and efficient. It offers more for less than the competition in terms of features, performance and fuel economy as well. Would we recommend it? Yes, we would.

2015 Hyundai Azera | new car review - AutoMiddleEast.com

Posted: 26 Oct 2014 03:10 AM PDT

Looks

The fifth generation of the Azera follows Hyundai's fluidic sculpture design philosophy and as a result, finally bears some resemblance to its siblings, the Genesis and Centennial. Upon first glance, the Azera is a striking car; a wide nose, neat rear end, and numerous lines running across the hood and sides contribute to that. The use of chrome isn't something Hyundai has skimped on in the design of the Azera, with the large grille up front, a thick chrome strip beginning at the headlights and continuing until the rear quarter panel, as well as another strip above the tail lights. Bling indeed!

Azera 1 614x368 2015 Hyundai Azera | new car review

Feels

Open the door and the beige leather and piano black trim combination radiates a sense of luxury. To add to the premium feel, the Azera boasts embroidery on the seat backs and nameplates on the arm rests of each door. Teens, or anyone with a musical ear will be delighted to know the Azera is available with a banging 10 speaker Infinity sound system as well. The rear seats are an absolute treat as they are well cushioned and provide great support without being uncomfortable. However, the use of hard plastics on majority of the dashboard and door panels serve as a constant reminder that the Azera isn't really a premium sedan.

hw038663 1 614x368 2015 Hyundai Azera | new car review

Engineering

In terms of safety, the Azera packs in 9 airbags in total, including side curtain airbags and a driver's knee airbag. Additionally, active head restraints are also present and are expected to reduce head and neck injury in a collision by up to 17%. The Azera is also equipped with an intelligent ECO button that modifies the engine and transmission controls to smoothen out the shift points and improve fuel economy.

hw014354 614x368 2015 Hyundai Azera | new car review

What's on offer?

Having let go of the 2.4 litre 4-cylinder engine from its line-up, the 2015 Hyundai Azera is only available with a 3.0 litre V6 engine under its hood. But no one is complaining, for with 246 horsepower and 282 Nm of torque being directed through a 6 speed automatic transmission to the front wheels, there's an adequate amount of power available at all times.

hw014350 614x368 2015 Hyundai Azera | new car review

Summing it…

With just one grade available, the Azera isn't a car that will have potential buyers scratching their head for days and contemplating which variant to opt for; more importantly, for just AED 112,900, it really is a great option for those willing to look beyond its badge.

Top speed 126mph

White mischief: Jeep's new Grand CherokeeWhite mischief: Jeep's new Grand Cherokee Photograph: PR

An ancient woman, bent over two sticks, shuffles up to me in the pretty market square of St-Fort-sur-Gironde, where we are on holiday. "Monsieur, cette voiture est grosse," she croaks, indicating the giant Jeep Grand Cherokee next to me. She hasn't a tooth in her head and, though she seems to be smiling, I'm not sure she is. Maybe she thinks it is gross? I bluff it out: "Oui," I say in fluent schoolboy-ese. "C'est énorme… comme un éléphant." I'm very pleased with this, but all I get is more gum and a sour look. She shuffles off, leaving me feeling a little self-conscious.

But that's how I've been feeling all week. Compared to the rickety Renaults and crabby Citroëns puttering around these quiet roads, this mighty Jeep has felt rudely, almost defiantly healthy – like a buffed bodybuilder strutting past a bunch of anaemic goths. With its military-grade wheels, glinting seven-bar grille and imperious sneer, it's been a tank parked on France's prettiest lawns.

On the plus side, it made mincemeat of the day-long drive slicing down France from top to bottom. The Jeep may have been designed for giving Mother Nature a good thrashing, but on France's long A-roads, the SUV was a revelation. A host of driver aids meant I could flick on the adaptive cruise control and let the car take the strain. At one point the laser-activated speed system allowed me to cover more than 100 miles without touching either the brake or the throttle. The only problem was that half of Britain also seemed to be on the road. The French radio bleated the traffic news with worrying words like "embouteillage" and "malheureusement" jumping out at us. In the end we drove 650 miles in 12 hours, doing 30.1 miles to the gallon at an average speed of 54mph. Long journeys always turn me into a stats geek.

Inside story: the comfortable interior – perfect for long journeys.Inside story: the comfortable interior – perfect for long journeys.

The Grand Cherokee has been in production for 21 years and this is an update of the fourth-generation model. It now boasts an incredibly generous standard kit list and a slightly cleaner and leaner diesel engine. Climb inside and the Jeep has a functional layout that's very easy to live with. There are silvery finishes to buttons and dials, and leather seats that wouldn't be out of place in a gentlemen's club. The dashboard is now digital and you can choose the info you want to display – for instance switching the speedo to kph when in France. Although, worryingly, the satnav still seemed to think we were in the UK and kept telling me to go the wrong way at roundabouts.

Jeeps have a proud offroad heritage and there's a rotary dial to adjust the suspension according to the terrain you encounter: the Selec-Terrain offers a choice of auto, snow, sport, sand/mud and rock. There's an all-new eight-speed ZF automatic gearbox to replace the clunkier five-speed box and changes now are pretty slick and smooth. The posher models also come with air-suspension so the ride matches the velvety gear change.

There are a couple of niggles. There are few storage cubbies up front and the door pockets are so narrow you skin your knuckles trying to retrieve your péage tickets. There is no left foot rest – irritating in an automatic. And the foot-operated parking brake rubs the side of your shin (a small detail, but these little things build up when you're in the car for 12 hours straight).

One sweet touch that caught my eye was the tiny image of an original 1945 Willys Jeep hidden in the lens of the front lights. Jeep really has covered a lot of miles since then…

Put Britain back in the driving seat

Britain desperately needs more lorry drivers. It has been publicised recently that the UK logistics industry is facing a major skills gap, leaving an estimated 30,000 driver vacancies to be filled. Although there are 285,000 HGV drivers in the UK, there are now more Polish registered vehicles going to mainland Europe from the UK, than there are UK registered vehicles. And yet, there are thousands of HGV driver jobs being advertised in the UK. Becoming an HGV driver is a fairly straightforward process and HGV training is available at locations across the UK. So, for those looking for work or fancying a career change, why not fill one of these vacancies and help the industry put the UK back in the driver's seat.

Keeping cyclists safe

The evolution of cyclingThe evolution of cycling.

The RAC has just launched a new scheme offering Personal Accident Insurance cover for cyclists. It offers financial protection in the event of a serious injury or disability sustained during a road accident whilst cycling. It can help with hospital or recuperation costs, or loss of earnings whilst out of work. You can insure yourself only, or include your partner and children on your policy. Financial benefits depend on the level of cover; and can cover accidental death, permanent disability, hospitalisation and temporary disability. Personal Accident Insurance will cover you when you are cycling if you get hit by any type of vehicle while on the road whether for leisure or for work, while waiting at traffic signals or if you have to make a bicycle repair or repair a puncture at the side of the road. Share this Article

For minivan lovers and shoppers it may seem like bad news that the segment is shrinking but there's a silver lining to that grey cloud. The cream, as they say, has risen to the top and the models left are better than ever.

FAST FACTS

Engine: 3.5L V6

Transmission: 6-speed auto

Horsepower: 266 hp at 6200 rpm

Torque: 245 lb-ft at 4700 rpm

Fuel Economy:18/25/21 FWD mpg (city/hwy/combined), 16/23/19 AWD mpg

Starting Price: $29,485 (including destination).

Cargo Behind 3rd Row: 39.1 cu-ft

Cargo Behind 2nd Row: 87.1 cu-ft

Cargo Behind 1st Row: 150 cu-ft (with seats removed)

That's perhaps nowhere more evident than with the Toyota Sienna.

New-ish

Updated for 2015 the Sienna delivers what you expect from Toyota, namely features like utility, reliability and safety. But it's also made a name for itself with dramatic styling and a luxurious interior, earning it the self-proclaimed title of the Swagger Wagon.

Traditionally minivans were bought out of necessity not desire. But with the introduction of the current generation family hauler Toyota has challenged that, and for good reason. When top-level versions cost as much as a luxury sedan, shouldn't you actually want to own one and be proud to park it in your driveway?

To help make it even more attractive the 2015 Sienna gets new taillight design on all trims but the SE, a new headlight design on SE and Limited models with huge LED daytime running light strips and unique grilles on each trim level.

More Luxury, More Features

2015 Toyota Sienna Review Interior 1

But the real changes come to the interior. The glove box and driver's side upper dash are now padded and there are new metallic trim bits throughout. Another addition are new interior color options including a beautiful Chestnut brown leather.

All models now get three-zone climate control, plus those controls are actually three-inches closer in easier reach of the driver.

2015 Toyota Sienna Review Interior 2There's a new driver information display between the gauges, plus every Sienna gets either a 6.1 or 7-inch screen in the center stack with the Entune apps suite. The 7-inch monitor and surround on our Limited tester looked sleek and modern.

Limited models also get a heated steering wheel, something that really ought to be available on all grades. It's impossible to get a kid into a car seat with gloves on, and in winter that wheel would help thaw your frozen fingers. With all the high-tech and luxury features packed into a Sienna, this should be standard on more models and an option on all of them.

What Everyone's Talking About

2015 Toyota Sienna Review Interior 6

From sliding doors to seats that fold flat into the floor, minivans have always strived to have a new trademark feature. Honda recently introduced a built-in vacuum on the Odyssey and Toyota is hoping to catch you attention with its latest innovation: Driver Easy Speak.

Yes, the added sound deadening makes for an even quieter cabin but in case your third row passengers still aren't listening, this new feature lets you amplify your voice with the press of a button.

2015 Toyota Sienna Review Interior 7Just hit the button on the main control screen and the driver's voice is piped through to the third row speakers. It sounds like a gimmick, but it actually works.

On top of all these updates, the Sienna continues to have the best 2nd row of any minivan and the 3rd row seats are by far the easiest to fold up and down.

The Drive

2015 Toyota Sienna Review 5

So how does it drive? Well, the engine and transmission are exactly the same but Toyota did some minor spring and shock adjustments and added 142 new spot welds to the chassis to stiffen it up in an effort to improve driving dynamics. Surprisingly, it actually feels more responsive and less like a yacht.

The ride is a bit floatier than the Honda Odyssey but there's a strong argument to be made for it – especially when your little ones have fallen asleep in the back. This Sienna just loves the highway miles.

More Safety Equipment

2015 Toyota Sienna Review 7

Safety is easily one of the biggest factors when it comes to buying a minivan so we're pleased to report a long list of additions.

There's now standard blind spot monitoring and a standard backup camera on all models plus higher trims get rear cross traffic alert. And with a new front passenger seat cushion airbag, there are now eight airbags standard, the most in the segment.

Models with the dynamic radar cruise control, itself something we've long been asking for in a minivan, also include a pre-collision warning system that can even apply the brakes if it detects an impending crash.

2015 Toyota Sienna Review 1

The Verdict

Are we certain that the 2015 Sienna is the best minivan in the segment? Apologies for the cop-out but without a head-to-head shootout with the Odyssey it's just too close to call. We can say this, however, the Sienna certainly is the best looking and most luxurious minivan. It's also got the most swagger.

LOVE IT
 • A minivan with swagger
 • Driver Easy Speak actually works well
 • Improved driving dynamics while keeping comfy ride
 • Nicer cabin with more features

LEAVE IT
 • Heated steering wheel should available on more trims
 • No mpg improvements

2014 Ram 2500 6.4L HEMI Review

Posted: 19 Oct 2014 05:00 PM PDT

2014 Ram 2500 6.4L HEMI Review

Ram is on a roll when it comes to innovating in the pickup truck segment lately. Adding technologies like an air suspension and offering a diesel half-ton are just a couple of ways Ram is setting itself apart.

FAST FACTS

Engine: 6.4L HEMI V8 with 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque.

Transmission: Six-speed automatic.

Max as tested towing: 12,230 lbs.

Price as tested: $62,745.

New Powerplant

For 2015, Ram added a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 to the options list for its heavy-duty pickup, offering more horsepower and torque than any other gasoline-powered HD on the market. It cranks out 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque that sounds pretty appealing on paper. That's a full 371 fewer lb-ft of torque than what you get with the 6.7L Cummins diesel, but it will also save you $6,665 compared to the oil burner, which is an $8,100 option. Opt for the 6.4L and you'll have to drop $1,495 over the base engine, a 5.7L HEMI V8 that makes 29 lb-ft of torque less than 6.4.

So, going for the new engine will save you money out of the gate. But once you pick up your new gas-powered heavy duty, will it deliver the goods? I never really wanted more power while driving without a load. Paired with a 3.73 rear end, the big gas engine does a respectable job of moving all this steel down the road. Compared to the diesel, the gas engine revs much more quickly and sits higher in the RPM range.

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

Where's the Jam?

Things change when you need to tow. Pulling a 6,000-lb load – roughly 50 percent of what our truck is rated to pull – the HEMI power feels underwhelming. Hills leave it wheezing hard and that is where the tradeoff between cash and power becomes clear. Even if it doesn't feel the best in its segment, the Cummins doesn't feel underpowered like the gasoline V8 does.

SEE ALSO: AutoGuide 2015 Heavy Duty Truck Comparison

2014-Ram-2500-HD-Review-rear-3q.jpg

Thankfully the weakness of the engine doesn't translate into other areas of this pickup as the suspension setup and dynamics of this 2500 are quite good. Clearly the frame and hardware taking the load are designed to handle the weight and they do so with ease. Roll in the corners is basically non-existent and nicely weighted steering gives the driver a confident feeling.

The other half of the 6.4-liter's value story is fuel economy. After a week with the truck, we were averaging just 13 mpg. While towing, that number would regularly drop down to rest around 10 mpg. That is the other major difference between the diesel, which in our experience can average anywhere between 15 and 17 MPG.

Cowboy Limousine

2014-Ram-2500-HD-Review-rear-bench.jpg

So poor fuel numbers and a lack of power are two weaknesses of the powertrain, though the package that wraps around it is impressive. A gorgeous and functional interior greets you, especially in the "Laramie Longhorn" trim. This truck does cowboy luxury better than anything else on the market. The leather is rich and even has a great smell. Details in the cabin are everywhere, like the small decorative decals around the gauges, or the fake barbed wire imprinted onto the floor mats. And real wooden accents in the center stack tie it all together for a luxury aura that doesn't come off feeling fake.

Those wood accents wraps around Ram's UConnect infotainment system that works flawlessly. It is exceedingly simple and easy to figure out. The real selling point of this system over others though, is its speed. There is never any lag or hesitation here.

2014-Ram-2500-HD-Review-interior.jpg

Pricing

The price is one of the make or break factors of this engine option. Choose the HEMI and you will save pretty big right out of the gate. This isn't a case where the choice will let you down eventually either. If you drive an average of 15,000 miles a year and gasoline costs $3.20 a gallon, you will be dropping roughly $3,700 a year on gasoline if you're running at 13 mpg. Comparatively, if you're paying $3.69 a gallon for diesel running at 15 mpg, you'll be dropping about $3,446 a year, which means you're only saving just over $200.

2014-Ram-2500-HD-Review-front-3q-wide.jpg

But here is one of the issues. Dressing this truck up in Laramie Long Horn trim and all the options we had, the price rises to $62,745. If you're dropping that kind of money, odds are you can afford to go a bit further and get the diesel.

The Verdict:

A weak powertrain wrapped in an excellent package, this new 6.4L HEMI powered Ram has its strengths and weaknesses. If you're not looking for the ultimate tow vehicle, than this truck can save you some cash. But let's be honest for a second. Who is going to buy a Ram HD and not pull big trailers? Who wants a heavy-duty pickup that feels like it can barely get the job done? If you're bank account is looking scarce, this is a viable option. But from one truck guy to another: spring for the diesel. You won't regret it.

LOVE IT
 • Gorgeous longhorn interior
 • 6.4L HEMI price
 • Great steering feel

LEAVE IT
 • Lacks power when towing
 • Fuel economy

Looks

Over the years, the Elantra has matured well and for the 5th generation flaunts Hyundai's fluidic design inspiration. Up front, the 2015 Hyundai Elantra houses large headlamps that wrap around the sides of the body along with the signature hexagonal grille that helps identify it as part of the Hyundai family. Depending on the amount you're willing to shell out, the Elantra sports 15, 16 or 17 inch wheels. As far as designs go, the Elantra Coupe and Sedan are nearly identical from every angle.

hw078481 614x368 2015 Hyundai Elantra | new car review

Feels

The similarity between the Coupe and Sedan are carried forward to the interior as well. The dashboard is divided into two prominent sections: the top, a nice soft yet firm sponge and the bottom, that makes blatant use of hard plastics. In the race to be innovative, the A/C vents at the far ends of the dashboard have been placed rather low and are now at chest level for the driver and passenger – quite odd, really. Though the rear seats offer decent amounts of leg room, the same cannot be said for headroom.

hw078494 614x368 2015 Hyundai Elantra | new car review

Engineering

When specced in top trim , the Elantra packs in a decent amount of kit. Cruise control, a heated steering wheel with audio controls, push button start, dual zone air conditioning and 6 airbags to be precise.

hw078488 614x368 2015 Hyundai Elantra | new car review

What's on offer?

The Elantra Sedan and Coupe both come with either a 1.6 litre engine capable of producing 128 horsepower and 157 Nm of torque, or a 1.8 litre engine that is good for 148 horsepower and 178 Nm of torque. Both engines are mated to a 6 speed automatic transmission.

hw078480 614x368 2015 Hyundai Elantra | new car review

Summing it…

With a price range of AED 51,000 to AED 73,000 the Elantra faces stiff competition from the likes of the Toyota Yaris and Nissan Sunny. However, as far as looks and features are concerned, the Elantra has an edge over its competition.
