Celebrate 100 Years of BMW with These Z8s

Posted:

From classics to exotics, there is plenty to celebrate during 2016 Monterey Car Week, and BMW is throwing its own 100th anniversary party of sorts.

The German automaker is celebrating this milestone with a large display of one of the more unanimously popular cars from its history: the BMW Z8. And some would say there's no better way to do it.

A star attraction in the Bond film: Tomorrow Never Dies, the Z8 is a total bombshell of a car. Designed by Henrik Fisker and inspired by the BMW 507, the car hit the market in 1999 and was sold until 2004.

2016 Monterey Car Week Coverage

Starting at well over $100,000, the Z8 had supercar performance numbers: zero-to-60 in 4.2 seconds with the top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. This was achieved through the use of a M5-derived 4.9-liter V8 that made 400 horsepower. That engine was mounted far back enough in the engine bay to maintain a 50/50 weight distribution. This wasn't a particularly heavy car either, weighing in at around 3,500 pounds.

Only 5,703 Z8s were ever sold and this collection at The Quail has to be one of the biggest gatherings of them. There's easily two dozen U.S.-spec models on display and each in immaculate condition. Take a look through our gallery and try to pick out your favorite.

Ford Focus RS Owners Get Free Performance Driving School

Posted:

Ford is offering a complimentary RS Adrenaline Academy Driving Experience to Focus RS owners.

Offered by Ford and Ford Performance, the complimentary program is being offered to initial owners of 2016 and 2017 Ford Focus RS models, so that owners get a chance to learn firsthand the capabilities of their hot hatch. The program takes place at Utah Motorsports Campus in Grantsville, Utah, and the schedule will be announced later this year.

According to Ford, the RS Adrenaline Academy Driving Experience provides owners with a full immersion into the performance and handling characteristics of the Focus RS, but in a safe environment with professional instruction. The extensive course teaches skills like braking, shifting and cornering techniques, while focusing on the particular dynamics of the Focus RS, like the car's four driving modes.

Providing the Focus RS cars will be the Ford Performance Racing School, with all of them outfitted with full safety equipment. An optional second day of instruction can be had that includes the Ford Mustang GT on the track.

Ford Focus RS owners will still be responsible for the travel and hotel costs, but the American automaker will cover the costs of the driving school in its entirety. The optional day with the Mustang GT, however, costs extra.

"Focus RS combines high levels of torque and horsepower, and all-wheel drive with Dynamic-Torque Vectoring, for a high level of handling, grip and cornering speed," said Henry Ford III, Ford Performance marketing manager. "RS Adrenaline Academy provides an opportunity for drivers to learn the capabilities of their cars on a closed road course with professional instruction and ample course time. This will be an exciting experience, one that owners will never forget!"

Gallery: Mazda Lets Historic Race Cars Shine at Monterey Motorsports Reunion

Posted:

If you're a gear head, there's almost nothing cooler than seeing old cars doing what they were built to do: Drive.

And for Mazda, nothing embodies the "Driving Matters" and "Zoom-Zoom" taglines better than letting its historic race cars speed around the automaker's namesake track, the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca during the Monterey Motorsports Reunion.

As part of Monterey Car Week and the celebrations surrounding Mazda's Millionth MX-5 Miata, the Japanese automaker brought back a fully restored Le Mans 787B race car with 630 horsepower that completed the endurance race in 1989, which happens to be the same year that the Mazda MX-5 Miata debuted. The restoration took two years to complete and, according to Mazda, the race car was taken down to its bare tub and rebuilt piece by piece. Other heritage race cars featured this year include a 1990 787 Group C, 1991 RX-7 IMSA GTO and 1992 RX-792P.

MX-5 Miata fans and drivers can sign the roadster and put their mark on an important piece of Mazda history. To see if the Millionth Miata will make a stop on its tour near you, check out our Millionth Miata Celebration Tour Hub. Other cool cars Mazda brought along to the Monterey Motorsports Reunion are an NA Miata, a Cosmo, RX-7, and a GLC.

Celebrating the Chevy Camaro’s 50th Birthday on Woodward Ave.

Posted:

Late August only means one thing in the Detroit area: It's time for the annual Woodward Dream Cruise! Coinciding with this legendary classic car event, Chevrolet is also celebrating the Camaro's 50th birthday.

Chevy's tire-smoking performance machine is now solidly in middle age, but don't think for a second it's gotten fat and slow over the years, quite the contrary. Today's model runs harder, stops sooner and grips better than any one that came before it.

Get the Flash Player to see this player.

Introduced for the 1967 model year, Camaro soon became a symbol of vehicular delinquency and youthful exuberance thanks to its muscular engines and aggressive styling. In the five decades since its introduction, this performance car has won legions of fans.

And whether they drive an unmolested original or a brand-new sixth-generation model, owners are crazy about their Camaros. Tapping into this enthusiasm, Chevrolet hosted several customer-focused events that coincided with Detroit's Dream Cruise. The first one was a rally and car show combination at their Lansing Grand River assembly plant where the car is built, the other was a cruise from downtown Detroit up historic Woodward Avenue.

Hundreds of cars and even more Camaro enthusiasts participated in these gatherings. Check out the above video for more about this legendary Chevy's half-century birthday.

2018 Lexus LC 500 Gets Slight Performance Bump

Posted:

The new Lexus flagship coupe will have more power than it originally debuted with.

The Lexus LC 500 was introduced at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show, powered by a 5.0-liter V8 with 467 horsepower and 389 pound-feet of torque. But now, Lexus LC chief engineer Koji Sato revealed at the 2016 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance that the coupe will actually have 471 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque when it arrives in dealerships sometime next year. The performance boost comes from improvements to the car's intake and exhaust, said Sato.

2016 Monterey Car Week Coverage

It's not a massive change of any sort, but does push the LC 500 closer to the 500-hp mark. The powerplant will be mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission and it will likely retain the same zero-to-60 time of 4.5 seconds that was first announced when the car debuted.

First Look: Millionth Mazda MX-5 Miata Kicks Off its Cross-Country Tour in Monterey

Posted:

The Mazda MX-5 Miata changed the motoring world when it arrived 1989, and since then, more than a million MX-5 Miatas have been made, a huge feat by any standard.

To celebrate this milestone, Mazda is taking its Millionth Miata on an epic cross-country road trip, and has just kicked off its tour at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca during 2016 Monterey Car Week. The Millionth Miata will be at the Historic Motorsports Reunion all weekend, and will actually end its tour here in October as well. (For a full list of stops, click here).

This Millionth Miata is a right-hand drive Japanese-spec model that rolled off the assembly line in Hiroshima on April 22, 2016. It's powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, but MX-5 Miatas sold in North America come with a more powerful 2.0-liter unit. Of course, this model also has a six-speed manual transmission.

ALSO SEE: AutoGuide to Celebrate Millionth Miata Milestone with Exclusive Content Hub

This Millionth Miata will be travelling across the states in tandem with the 15th Miata ever built, a 27-year-old model that debuted at the 1989 Chicago Auto Show. Even though the two roadsters may look wildly different, they adhere to the exact same formula, a huge reason why there have been a million of them.

One of the coolest things about this Millionth Miata is that at each stop on its tour, 240 MX-5 Miata fans and owners will get the chance to sign the car, putting their mark on this historic roadster, which will surely be put in the Mazda museum in California one day.

But why have there been a million Miatas? The little roadster has always been the torchbearer for simple driving joy, and it captures exactly how a sports car should feel: it's light, engaging, fun and uncomplicated, which is really refreshing these days of over-horsepowered, numb computers on wheels.

When you drive an MX-5 Miata, you get this really special sensation that you're connected to the car, and although there are sports car that are faster and more powerful, few are as intimate or as fun.

The car has also always been attainable and proved that you don't have to be rolling in money to afford a fun sports car.

Surely, a million Miatas can't be wrong, and we have no doubts that it will be easy for Mazda to sell a million more.

Volvo, Polestar Considering Formula E Entry

Posted:

Volvo is eyeing the Formula E race series to promote its electrified models.

The Swedish automaker is currently part of the advisory board for the FIA race series and a spokesperson recently confirmed to Autocar that although there are no immediate plans to enter Formula E, it remains a possibility for the brand. Volvo wants to sell one-million electrified cars by 2025, and promoting its products in Formula E would help raise awareness about the brand and its support for electrification.

The only thing is, Volvo itself doesn't align with motorsports, so it would be campaigned under the Polestar banner, the automaker's performance brand.

Earlier this year, Volvo revealed an all-electric concept and wants to produce two hybrid variants of every model in its lineup. An all-electric model is scheduled to launch in 2019. Right now, Volvo only participates in the World Touring Car Championship with its S60 Polestar.

Other automakers that have already committed to Formula E include BMW, DS, Renault, Mahindra and Jaguar.

Bugatti Chiron Hits Monterey for US Debut

Posted:

The Bugatti Chiron has officially been unveiled in California where it will be on display during Monterey Car Week.

Visitors can first see the car at The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering on Friday, before it heads to the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on Sunday, where it will be on display beside the Bugatti Vision Gran Turismo Concept.

This is our first look at a U.S.-spec Chiron, though the changes are minimal. Orange indicator markers are seen in the bumper while the speedometer is now displayed in mph, topping out at 300 mph. Top speed is limited to 261 mph in the Chiron, though Bugatti will use unrestricted versions of the car to try and crack the Veyron's production-car land speed record of 267.8 mph.

SEE ALSO: Bugatti Chiron and Vision Gran Turismo Get Together for the First Time

Of course, power still comes from a quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16, sending 1,480 horsepower to all four wheels. The sprint to 60 mph comes in under 2.5 seconds, while 124 mph happens in just 6.5 seconds.

Only 500 Chirons will be built with more than 200 cars already sold. Bugatti says about 30 percent of the Chiron's customers will come from the U.S., which means that roughly 150 of these cars will be sold here. Deliveries of the new Chiron will begin in the fall.

If you're thinking about picking one up, it will cost you 2.4 million euros or about $2.7 million U.S.

Ford GT Demand Spurs 2 More Years of Production

Posted:

Ford will continue to build its GT supercar for another four years, which means that we can expect a total of 1000 units.

The first run of 500 cars, which will be built over the first two years, is already spoken for, and plenty of people who wanted to buy one were denied access. Those applicants who were wait-listed during the initial process will be first in line to get their hands on one of the newly announced GTs from the third year of production.

The final year of production will be open to those who were initially denied a car and to new applicants. Those who missed their chance to apply the first time will have to wait until early 2018 to place all-new applications.

Keeping GT production going also supports Ford's motorsports initiatives in both IMSA and World Endurance Championship for the next four years.

"While we can't build enough Ford GTs for everyone who has applied, we are going to produce additional vehicles in an effort to satisfy more of our most loyal Ford ambassadors," says Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance. "We want to keep Ford GT exclusive, but at the same time we know how vital this customer is to our brand."

AutoGuide Answers: We Pretend We’re Ballers and Pick Monterey Auction Cars to Buy

AutoGuide Answers: We Pretend We’re Ballers and Pick Monterey Auction Cars to Buy

AutoGuide Answers: We Pretend We’re Ballers and Pick Monterey Auction Cars to Buy

Posted:

It's Monterey Car Week, which means there's a ton of automotive eye candy to be found rolling around coastal California. However, the auctions are just as interesting, and many rare and collectable vehicles are being sold off for the highest bid.

A quick look through the Mecum lots left us all discussing what we'd take if we had unlimited funds. Some of our editors choices are quite surprising. Here's what they said:

ca0816-244222_1@2x

1996 Chevrolet Corvette Gran Sport – Dan Ilika, Road Test Editor:

If I had to pick just one, I'd go with the 1996 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport coupe. There isn't a vehicle that reminds me of my childhood love affair with the automobile (outside of my parents' minivan) more than the '96 Grand Sport. It was 1997, and we all piled in the van to make the pilgrimage to Cooperstown, NY, home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. After a couple days spent wandering the Hall, we stumbled upon a since-shuttered Corvette museum where I fell in love. There it was, in all its Admiral Blue glory. I didn't know much about the car at the time other than the fact I wanted it. And I still do. The color scheme – the white center stripe, red fender hash marks and black wheels – still gives me chills, and not just because it bears a striking resemblance to a Buffalo Bills home jersey. Now if only I can convince the bosses that I need a raise in time for the auction…

ca0816-259992_1@2x

1965 Shelby GT350 – Jodi Lai, Managing Editor:

"I've never had to answer such a difficult question before in my life. I love all kinds of cars from vintage beaters to modern supercars to little micro cars with double-digit horsepower and high-brow marques to blue collar favorites, so looking at the lots up for auction, it took me forever to come up with what I really wanted.

I'd love to pick up a vintage muscle car, however. There's an amazing 1965 Shelby GT350 Fastback for sale in the classic blue and white that gets me really excited. It's highly original, has seen only three owners, and is incredibly well taken care of. The one catch is that it could fetch more than half a million bucks! After that, I'd buy a modern day GT350 in the same colors.

My parents used to have a Mach 1 Boss, and I love old Mustangs because of that."

ca0816-259993_1@2x

1935 Auburn 851 SC Boattail Speedster – Craig Cole, Associate Editor:

"If money were no object, my "pick-of-the-litter" from Mecum Auctions would be this oh-so-lovely 1935 Auburn 851 SC Boattail Speedster. Normally I detest convertibles and even sunroofs, but with a body this sexy I can make an exception (and pack some Coppertone SPF 18,000). My reason for selecting this creamy-yellow beauty is that NOTHING looks like this anymore; no car in production today has lines and forms that rival this Auburn, plus its supercharged Lycoming flathead inline-eight is undoubtedly a gem of an engine. The suicide doors, exposed exhaust pipes and voluptuous fenders seal the deal for me. Now to scrounge up a million bucks so I can make a bid…"

ca0816-244515_1@2x

1960 Mercedes-Benz 190SL – Sami Haj-Assaad, Features Editor:

"While not as rare or expensive as my colleagues choices, I simply can't take my eyes off this baby-blue Benz. Sure, the purists and collectors may scoff at my choice, because it's not the amazing Gullwinged 300 SL, but there's a different vibe that just exudes elegance with this convertible. The previous owner certainly took great care with this example being put up for auction, giving it a full restoration before hitting the auction block. Add in those stylish white-wall tires and a tan soft-top, which completes the cars overall design and I'm in love."

ca0816-244421_1@2x

1936 Ford Custom Pickup – Stephen Elmer, News Editor:

"What can I say, I'm a sucker for a pickup truck. This gorgeous 1936 Ford Custom Pickup would get all of my auction bids. Besides having a classic look which is soul stirring, under the hood lives a modern Ford V8 that makes 345 horsepower hooked to a five-speed manual. That means I get the gorgeous style without the hassle of a classic engine. To top it off, it's finished in British Racing Green, a famous hue which brings a feeling of elegance to the truck."

ca0816-244562_1@2x

Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione– Jason Siu, News Editor:

"While it's totally tempting to choose a McLaren P1 or an SLS as my car of choice, I would actually spring for something cheaper: The Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione. It's one of the rarest cars to ever hit U.S. soil, and it's one of the few cars that looks absolutely exquisite from every angle. Sure, the Alfa Romeo's front end styling isn't for everyone, but I feel like the 8C is modern, but isn't too modern where electronics and fancy tech gadgets take over the spirit of driving. It's also quite a bit different in a sea of Ferraris, Lamborghinis and even McLarens in today's supercar world. It may not be the fastest, most powerful or the most expensive, but something about the Alfa Romeo 8C just makes it a work of art in my eyes."

ca0816-244577_1@2x

1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 Berlinetta – Michael Accardi, News Editor (GM Inside News and All Ford Mustangs)

"I pick this 275 GTB/4 Berlinetta because it's automotive hipsterism at its finest, sprinkled with a dash of elitism.

Since 1970 this 275 GTB was owned and maintained by a Ferrari mechanic– although self immolation will always be a risk.

Steve McQueen also owned one, which instantly makes it cool even if most hip kids don't know who Steve McQueen is or what that the little horsies are for and who put this extra pedal here?"

MECUM MONTEREY

MECUM MONTEREY

1949 Volkswagen Hebmuller Type 14A Cabriolet – Sebastian Bell, News Editor (VWvortex, Fouritude and Swedespeed)

"The Type 14A was an early attempt at turning the Beetle into a sports car. Volkswagen tasked coachbuilder, Hebmüller, with building a 2+2 convertible and the result was this beauty.

Sadly, shortly after production began in 1949, a fire broke out in Hebmüller's paint department and the cost of rebuilding was too much for the uninsured coachbuilder. Karmann finished the last of the Type 14As in 1953, but now it's estimated that only about 100 of these premium Volkswagens are left.

Ultimately, the Hebmuller kind of doesn't make sense. You can still feel the tension between the idea of a premium car and the reality of post-war Germany. My favorite line from the ad is: "Luxuriously fitted with roof insulation." Well, la-dee-da."

Bentley Recalls Continental Flying Spur for Sunroofs that can Fly Off

Posted:

Bentley is calling back a small group of Flying Spurs over an issue that can cause the sunroof to detach.

The issue was identified by the supplier after the company changed changed its manufacturing process, resulting in glass that was not properly secured to the roof frame, allowing it to become disconnected. If this happens while the vehicle is moving, the glass can fly off and become a hazard on the road.

The affected vehicles were built between April 15, 2007 and October 31, 2008. Bentley dealers will inspect the affected models and apply new adhesive to the sunroof to make sure the connection is strong.

The recall is supposed to begin this month.

Uber, Volvo Partnership Aims to Put Self-Driving SUVs on US Roads by Year-End

Posted:

Volvo has announced a new partnership with Uber that will see the ride sharing service put a fleet of 100 self-driving XC90 SUVs on U.S. roads in the next four months.

Volvo will produce a new "base" vehicle for Uber that will be able to use the latest in autonomous driving technology, up to and including being fully self driving. These base vehicles will be sold to Uber, where they will be outfitted with Uber's own self-developed autonomous systems, though Volvo will also use the same base vehicle to develop the next generation of its self-driving technology. Uber has already announced that it is buying 100 XC90 SUVs from Volvo right off the bat.

According to Uber, the XC90s will be on the road before the end of 2016 in the Pittsburgh area. For now, an attentive driver is expected to be behind the wheel. Both Volvo and Uber have contributed a combined $300 million to the project.

SEE ALSO: Swedish Prince Designs Volvo Polestar Art Car

Volvo and Uber call the alliance "the beginning of  what both companies view as a longer term industrial partnership."

The XC90 is built on the brand's Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), a key factor in why Uber wanted it. Since the beginning, SPA was developed to incorporate the latest in self-driving technology. Uber will outfit the XC90 with its own self-driving systems, including lidar, radar and a suite of camera, though Volvo engineers will help with the process.

"Over one million people die in car accidents every year. These are tragedies that self-driving technology can help solve, but we can't do this alone," said Travis Kalanick, Uber's chief executive. "That's why our partnership with a great manufacturer like Volvo is so important. Volvo is a leader in vehicle development and best-in-class when it comes to safety. By combining the capabilities of Uber and Volvo we will get to the future faster, together."

VW Set to Debut 300-Mile Electric Vehicle Next Month

Posted:

Volkswagen is focusing on electrified vehicles as it tries to move past its diesel scandal.

The German automaker will reportedly head to the 2016 Paris Motor Show in late September with a 300-mile electric vehicle in tow. The news comes from Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess, who mentioned it in an interview with German publication Wirtschafts Woche. Volkswagen's new plan is to build two- to three-million electric vehicles a year by 2025, along with unveiling 30 new electric vehicles by then. One of those cars will bow in Paris.

SEE ALSO: Volkswagen Bans Employees from Playing Pokemon Go

In the interview, Diess said that the new model is capable of traveling between 400 to 600 kilometers on a single charge, although that is likely on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), which is more generous than the EPA's estimations. Still, that should be good for a 300-mile range in the real world, enough to compete with the Tesla Model S and beaty other offerings in today's marketplace including the Nissan Leaf.

The new model will be about the size of a Volkswagen Golf, while offering the cargo space of a Passat, added Diess. The prototype that will make its debut in late September will be close to production, which is currently scheduled for 2018-2019.

Hyundai, Google Discussing Possible Partnership

Posted:

Hyundai and Google could be working together in the near future.

The company's president Jeong Jin Haeng confirmed that the two companies have some common areas that may require cooperation, and that the Korean automaker is in discussions with Google about a possible partnership.

Hyundai has been one of the most active automakers in adopting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto into its lineup, but is one of the few that is lagging behind when it comes to autonomous technologies.

For the most part, Hyundai and Kia have passed on joint ventures or alliances with other automakers, but now appear to be open to the idea, especially with tech companies.

Connected and self-driving cars are becoming a heavy focus for various automakers worldwide and Hyundai may be forced to team up with companies like Google to keep up with the competition. The company wouldn't confirm whether discussions about a partnership would be for autonomous technologies, but given Google's investment into self-driving cars, it is most likely. It also helps that Hyundai's former U.S. chief, John Krafcik, now leads Google's self-driving car division.

Earlier this year, Google and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) announced a partnership to outfit Chrysler Pacifica minivans with self-driving technology.

2017 Audi A4 Ultra is More Efficient, Less Powerful

Posted:

For 2017, Audi has revised the front-wheel drive A4 Ultra to improve fuel economy, bringing the car's rating up to 27 mpg in the city and 37 on the highway.

The 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is now paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission instead of a CVT like the 2016 model, while the combustion method was also revised, bringing the compression ratio from 9.6:1 to 11.7:1.

That results in less fuel used but also less power, with the 2.0-liter engine now making 190 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque, a drop of 30 hp and 22 lb-ft of torque compared to the previous model. The result is a 0 to 60 mph sprint that happens in 7.1 seconds, a distance that was covered by the 2016 model in 6.6 seconds.

While the drop in performance is noticeable, so is the jump in fuel economy, with the 2017 model gaining 6 mpg on the highway and 3 in the city.

Audi says that the A4 Ultra will be available with the brand's latest technology including the MMI infotainment system, Audi virtual cockpit and Audi Connect. Audi's suite of safety features will also be available with the car.

Best of all, Audi has announced that the A4 Ultra will start at $35,850, a full $1,000 less than the 2016 A4.

Top 5 Most Expensive Auction Cars Sold at Past Monterey Car Weeks

Posted:

Classic Ferrari sports cars are a safe bet if you're looking for a collectible car.

As we enter 2016 Monterey Car Week, AutoGuide.com decided to take a look back at the most expensive cars ever sold during the event's prestigious auctions. This year's event should have plenty of high-profile cars crossing the auction block and it will be exciting to see if any set a record.

SEE ALSO: 2016 Monterey Car Week Coverage

One car to keep an eye on this year that isn't a Ferrari is the first-ever Shelby Cobra. Sporting serial number CSX 2000, the Shelby will cross the auction block on August 19 and there's a possibility it could become one of the most expensive cars to ever be sold at an auction.

5. 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider

Auctioned off on August 17, 2015 at a Gooding & Company auction, this 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider fetched $16,830,000. It was one of only 37 covered-headlight SWB California Spiders in existence, powered by a 3.0-liter V12 engine with 240 horsepower paired to a four-speed manual gearbox.

4. 1964 Ferrari 250 LM

A 1964 Ferrari 250 LM was sold by RM Auctions on August 13, 2015 for $17,600,000. Offered as part of "The Pinnacle Portfolio," the Ferrari 250 LM is one of just 32 units ever created and had recently competed in the Le Mans Classic and Tour Auto. It also featured matching chassis and engine numbers, proving it is all original. Like other Ferrari 250 LM by Scaglietti models, it is powered by a 3.3-liter V12 engine with 320 hp, paired to a five-speed manual transmission.

3. 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale

Netting $26,400,000 on August 16, 2014 at an RM Auctions event, this 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale was actually the fourth-most expensive car ever sold at auction at the time. Offers for the Speciale opened with a surprising bid of $15-million, stunning the crowd present. Two more offers pushed the bidding to $20-million before it reached $22-million. From there it was only a matter of time before the winning bid of $26.4-million was accepted.

2. 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S NART Spider

On August 17, 2013, this 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S NART Spider was sold by RM Auctions to the tune of $27,500,000. Before the auction, it was estimated this particular example would sell between $14-million to $17-million, but clearly, expectations were exceeded. Only 10 of these North American Racing Team cars were ever built and this specific car had only one owner from new. It was also announced that all of the proceeds from the auction would be given to charity. And who went home with the car? Lawrence Stroll, a Canadian entrepreneur who helped develop the Tommy Hilfiger clothing brand.

1. 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta

But all of these collectible Ferraris pale in comparison to the $38,115,000 this 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta fetched at a Bonhams auction. Sold on August 14, 2014 at Bonhams' Quail Lodge Auction in Carmel, California, it became the most valuable car in history to be sold at auction. Sporting serial number 3851 on the firewall, the auction car was the first public offering in many years.

2015 BMW M5, M6 Recalled Over Driveshaft Failures

Posted:

BMW is calling back two of its performance models, the 2015 M5 and M6, over an issue with the driveshaft.

In the affected models, which includes the M6 Gran Coupe and Convertible, a weld on the driveshaft can fracture, leading to driveshaft failure. BMW received two reports of driveshaft failure about one year ago, while a third more recent failure prompted an investigation.

BMW engineers concluded that the failures likely occurred between 35 mph to 50 mph, specifically when the car shifts from second to third.

BMW technicians will inspect the driveshaft and replace it if a faulty weld is found.

BMW Diesel Models Still Delayed Despite Approval from Regulators

Posted:

BMW's range of 2017 diesel models are still delayed despite being approved for sale in the U.S. from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency).

Back on July 15, AutoGuide.com reported that BMW's 2017 diesel lineup was being delayed thanks to extra scrutiny from the EPA, though as of early August, the EPA announced that all of BMW's models were compliant with U.S. regulations.

A concerned customer notified us that his BMW X5 diesel was still delayed despite the reports in the press that BMW's diesel lineup had been certified by the EPA.

"Currently BMW is still pending additional agencies approvals," BMW spokesman Hector Arellano-Belloc told AutoGuide.com. "As a result, production of these models will commence once homologation has been finalized."

BMW would not offer any details regarding which agency is holding them up and for what reason, though the brand did confirm that it is certainly not the EPA. "BMW is pleased that all MY2017 BMW diesel models (328d Sedan, 328d Sports Wagon, X3 xDrive28d, X5 xDrive35d) have successfully completed EPA testing and certification process," he said.

Besides the EPA, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) is the other major emissions regulator in the U.S. Passing CARB's certification allows cars to be sold in a number of states that choose to follow CARB's rules, including New York, California, Maine, Vermont, Washington and more.

CARB spokeman Seongyup Kim confirmed to AutoGuide.com that all four diesel BMW models have been certified for sale in the U.S. The information is also available on the CARB website.

Since the Volkswagen emissions scandal, which involved the German automaker installing illegal software in its diesel cars that allowed them to cheat on emissions tests, the EPA has been applying extra scrutiny to all diesel vehicles. "There has been no indication that BMW's diesel models do not meet all requisite emission standards or that there is a defeat device in the vehicle," Arellano-Beloc previously told AutoGuide.com in an email.

So far, we haven't been able to confirm why BMW's diesel models have been delayed. It is curious that its gas-powered cars haven't been held up, so we think this might be an issue internally at BMW or with another regulatory body.
