Tesla Roadster owners don't have to be envious of Model S owners and their range in the near future.

The American electric automaker has revealed the Roadster 3.0 update, which will give the convertible sports car a new battery, retrofit aero kit and new tires to improve its range to over 400 miles. Currently in its prototype phase, the Roadster 3.0 package will gain a new battery pack that delivers roughly 70 kWh in the same package as the original battery while a new aero kit will improve the Roadster's drag coefficient by 15 percent to about 0.31.

In addition, the Roadster will receive new tires with an improved rolling resistance coefficient (about 20 percent) while making additional improvements to the wheel bearings and residual brake drag.

As a result of all these changes, Tesla is boasting that the Roadster will have over a 400-mile range, a predicted 40- to 50-percent improvement compared to the first iteration of the Roadster. In the company's testing, it said, "There is a set of speeds and driving conditions where we can confidently drive the Roadster 3.0 over 400 miles." Tesla plans on demonstrating that range in the real world with a non-stop drive from San Francisco to Los Angeles in the early weeks of next year.

Mazda has joined in on the fun with its own Vision Gran Turismo called the LM55.

Paying homage to the Japanese automaker's success at the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Mazda LM55 is inspired by the company's Kodo design language, with a stance that is reminiscent of the famous 787 B that claimed the overall victory at the race. Featuring a monocoque chassis and plenty of carbon fiber components, the LM55 is finished in a striking atmospheric-white paint. Though Mazda didn't reveal powertrain specifications on its LM55, the company did say it "offers the epitome of power, efficiency and durability and the result is an exceptional power to weight ratio exceeding that of most cars in its class."

Should I Buy a Midsize Pickup Truck?

Posted:

There have been three times in my life that I almost bought a compact pickup truck.

With great utility, right-sized dimensions and livable fuel consumption, a small workhorse would be a perfect fit for my life. Without any toys to haul, a job in the trades industry or a large piece of rustic land to maintain, anything larger than a small pickup truck would be overkill. Especially considering I live in the suburbs of one of the largest cities in North America.

I do own a home, 2015-Chevrolet-Colorado-04.JPGand with home ownership comes a multitude of tasks a small pickup truck is well suited for like moving furniture, hauling soil and of course obligatory trips to the dump. But I'm not a truck guy. And every time my thoughts turn towards truck ownership the same two questions arise. Can I live with the compromises pickup truck ownership comes with? Or have those compromises disappeared?

SEE ALSO: 2015 Chevy Colorado Review

To find the answers, I arranged to spend some time behind the wheel of the new 2015 Chevrolet Colorado and 2015 GMC Canyon. There are two reasons why I chose these trucks. First, they are the newest entries into the smaller pickup truck market and by far the most contemporary. Second, General Motors designed them for a broad range of customers including people like me who have never owned a pickup. In fact, GM expects roughly 30 percent of all Canyon and Colorado buyers to come from other segments like crossovers and SUVs.

2015-Chevrolet-Colorado-01.JPG

Not All That Small

To call the Canyon and Colorado twins small is misleading. They are really mid-size pickup trucks as nothing in the North American market is a true compact pickup truck anymore. Available with the choice of two truck cabs paired to one of two bed lengths, the shortest versions of the pickups come in at 212-inches in length; nearly ten inches longer than a Chevrolet Traverse crossover. Want the larger crew cab body style with the longer 6.2-foot box? Add another foot in overall length. Safe to say, none of these trucks are squeezing into those "Compact Car Only" parking spots.

When it comes to height, the trucks are more livable at just over 70-inches tall – roughly the same as a Honda Pilot. Weight too matches that of a mid-size crossover with the lightest extended-cab RWD automatic transmission trucks starting at 3,880 lbs., while the heaviest 4WD automatic transmission crew cab trucks, equipped with the 6.2-foot box, top out at a still manageable 4,500 lbs.

2015-GMC-Canyon-12.JPG

Drives like a Truck, But Better

I sampled the GMC Canyon SLE Crew Cab Long Bed with four-wheel drive first. Being the largest, heaviest model available, I wanted to see how manageable it would be behind the wheel. My initial impressions? Not much of a surprise here, it drives like a truck. With a high riding position, stiff steering and a large turning radius, the Canyon makes no excuses that it's ready for work. What did surprise me is how compliant the ride quality is as the Canyon did not bounce down the road like pickups of old, but was still able to laugh its way through a pothole-strewn, ill maintained road.

SEE ALSO: 2015 AutoGuide.com Truck of the Year: Part 1

2015-GMC-Canyon-13.JPGThis truck came equipped with a 3.6-liter V6 making 305 HP and 269 lb-ft paired to a six-speed automatic that is good for 17 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway. There's a lack of low-end grunt with this combination as the V6 feels more at home in the medium rpm range. Once up to speed, the Canyon had no trouble maintaining velocity, even on the freeway. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to sample the 200 HP 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. Unsure how the lower output would handle the truck's weight, fuel consumption does improve to 20 MPG city and 27 MPG highway on RWD models.

Next, I drove a Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab Short Bed RWD. Powered be the same V6 engine and automatic transmission, the lighter truck immediately felt more responsive. With less weight, specifically on the front end of the truck, the ease of driving this truck matches any mid-size crossover I've recently tested. The shorter wheelbase can be felt in most driving situations, like making right hand turns in residential areas. Parking it at a local big box store wasn't much of a problem either, due to the standard backup camera and width that's on par with a Hyundai Santa Fe.

A Truck and an SUV

The biggest surprise of the Canyon/Colorado for me has to be the interior. I remember the last generation model and even when new, I felt the interior felt cheap and utilitarian to a fault. That's not the case anymore. Mimicking the interior of the larger Sierra and Silverado trucks, these new pickups have the look and feel of a SUV or crossover. Options abound as well including GM's new Onstar 4GLTE wireless internet service.

Less impressive though are the front seats. Comfort is merely acceptable and the hard plastic outer edge kept digging into my thigh every time I entered and exited the vehicle.2015-GMC-Canyon-07.JPG Things improve in the rear of crew cab models as 35.8-inches of legroom greets passengers. Two full size adults will have no problem fitting back there and even three could make it work in a pinch. Be aware this is not the case with the much smaller extended cab models though. That backseat is the domain of children only.

SEE ALSO: 2015 AutoGuide.com Truck of the Year: Part 2

With the smaller 5.2-foot bed, the truck box can carry 41.3 cubic feet of stuff, plus all the extra space above the roofless bed. The larger 6.2-foot bed increase capacity to 49.9 cubic feet. All Canyons and Colorados have a standard step built into the corners of the rear bumper which helps getting into and out the trucks bed, especially for shorter people. Depending on configurations, the trucks carry a payload between 1,410 lbs. to 1,590 lbs. and can tow upwards of 7,000 lbs. with the V6 engine.

2015-GMC-Canyon-08.JPG

The Verdict

Pricing is where things get a bit tricky with the mid-size Canyon/Colorado. The cheapest way into these trucks is with a Chevrolet Colorado Extended Cab Long Bed 2WD Base that starts at $20,995 after destination charges. But, get a little carried away with the options and it's possible to spec a GMC Canyon Crew Cab Long Bed SLT 4WD over $45,000. That's quite costly considering a Chevrolet Silverado starts in the mid-$20,000s and can be well equipped around the $40,000 mark.

Still, if sensible with the options list the Colorado can be had at a reasonable price. For me, optioned the way I'd want it, a 2015 Chevrolet Colorado Crew Cab Short Bed LT RWD would come in under $30,000. That's still a good chunk of change, but it does net me a flexible utility vehicle. Despite the truck's excessive length, it would be a wholly livable vehicle I could commute to work in, carry my family in and put to work on the weekends. Maybe one day I will become a pickup truck convert.

Takata Corp. announced today that Stefan Stocker is stepping down from his position as the company's president.

The announcement follows recalls that are the result of defective airbag inflators that Takata supplied to several major automakers. So far there are five deaths officially associated with the defect, all in Honda vehicles. The defective inflators are at the root of 24 million recalled vehicles worldwide in 2014 including approximately 17 million in the U.S. The faulty airbags can explode with too much force and send shards of metal into the cabin. Stocker became the comapny's first foreign president in June, 2013 shortly after joining the company. He will remain with the company as a board member.

CEO Shigehisa Takada, 48, will become the company's president and will take a 50 percent pay but for four months, the company said in a statement. He will also continue to serve as the CEO ad chairman of the company. Stocker and three other executives will also take pay cuts for four months.

Mercedes Developing Electric Vehicle Platform

Mercedes-Benz is in the early stages of developing a new platform that will be able to underpin a range of electric vehicles.

The modular architecture will be able to serve as the basis for vehicles spanning a wide range of wheelbases, focusing on saving weight to compensate for having heavy electric powertrain components according to a report by AutoBild. For now, the "Ecoluxe" platform is supposedly slated to underpin four body styles.

EVs based on the Ecoluxe architecture will power their rear wheels and will use four-wheel starring for improved handling. The report claims that the first model will have the equivalent of 544 or 604 hp in the base and S models respectively.

The battery pack will be located under the passenger compartment and will be able to hold enough power to carry the car for at least 279 miles.

Mercedes is expected to release the first Ecoluxe-based vehicle in either 2019 or 2020 in Europe with a North American launch shortly thereafter if the rumored project makes it that far.

McLaren P1 Looks Exquisite in Gulf Oil Livery

Call us bias, but this might be the best looking factory McLaren P1 yet.

Commissioned by a businessman from McLaren Special Operations (MSO), this custom McLaren P1 features the iconic Gull Oil racing livery with its baby blue and orange two-tone shade. Contrasted with the black paint on the doors, front bumper and side air ducts, it's a three-tone P1 that not only looks classy, but race-ready. The British automaker also did a fantastic job keeping the orange highlights as accents, found on the brake calipers and lower valences.

Inside, small hints of orange and blue are found throughout without either of the colors being overpowering in the otherwise black cabin. Who says that money can't buy taste?

Ford ProCal Won’t Void Your EcoBoost Warranty

One of the benefits of having a turbocharged powertrain is all its untapped performance, and Ford is looking to put that into the hands of the owners.

Now that the American automaker is equipping nearly all its models with an EcoBoost engine, including its all-new Mustang, enthusiasts will be happy to hear that the company will back its Ford Racing ProCal tuner with a warranty. That is, with the Ford Racing ProCal, owners will be able to increase performance by remapping the ECU without concern of voiding the warranty or worse, blowing up the engine. With a retail price of $595, the Ford Racing calibrations aren't as extreme as what you can potentially get out of the car, but they are also safe and guaranteed.

For example, the Ford Focus ST can see its torque increased by 90 lb-ft using the ProCal. The company hasn't shared possible increases in performance when used with its Fiesta ST and Mustang EcoBoost engines, but expect similar gains as the ProCal likely adds more fuel and additional boost from the turbocharged engine.

So why wouldn't the vehicles simply come from the factory with the added performance? Think emissions and fuel economy.

Cadillac CT6 to Get Aluminum Body: Report

Posted:

Cadillac's upcoming large rear-wheel drive sedan will be light for it's size, but the company hasn't explained exactly how it plans to get there.

A new report from Automobile suggests that Cadillac will give the CT6 a body made of aluminum to save weight rather than the composite structure made of high-strength steel, aluminum, and steel stampings and castings. According to the report, the CT6 will actually have a curb weight similar to the Alpha-based CTS, sitting somewhere in the range of 3,700 to 4,100 lbs.

The report also suggests that the CT6, which is expected to debut later next year, will be powered by Cadillac's upcoming engine family that will include four- six- and eight-cylinder configurations.

Cadillac announce earlier this year that it will migrate to a sequential alpha-numeric naming structure for its vehicles that will eventually re-name all of its cars by number to denote their place within the lineup. The all-new CT6 will be the first of those to adopt the new structure, but that name leaves space for more models above it because Cadillac currently has everything from CT2 to CT8 trademarked.

The average U.S. household is expected to spend less than $2,000 on gas next year.

As fuel prices continue to drop around the country, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) has released a report showing that the average U.S. household will spend about $550 less on gasoline next year compared to 2014. Annual motor fuel expenditures are expected to drop to their lowest level in 11 years and it will be the first time since 2009 that average annual spending will be below $2,000.

SEE ALSO: Oklahoma City First in U.S. to $1.99 Gas

EIA forecasts that the average household gasoline costs will be $1,962 next year after prices for U.S. gasoline has dropped for 11 weeks in a row to an average of $2.55 per gallon as of December 15. Increases in average fuel economy of vehicles being sold is also contributing to lower expected fuel expenditures. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has said that the production-weighted fuel economy of cars has increased from 23.1 mpg for model year 2005 cars to almost 28 mpg for model year 2014. In addition, fuel economy for trucks has also increased 19 percent, from 16.9 mpg to 20.1 mpg.
