Tesla plans to announce an upgrade to its existing Roadster sports cars this week in keeping with a promise it made earlier this year.

CEO Elon Musk told Auto Express in October that the company planned to offer an upgrade to the Tesla Roadster that would boost its driving range to about 400 miles compared to the EPA-estimated 245 mile range they currently have. Tesla still hasn't announced how it plans to achieve the upgrade or what it will cost owners, but Musk responded to someone via Twitter on Friday, December 19, saying the company will announce the update this week.

Musk said other, more pressing issues with the company caused delays in announcing the Roadster enhancement. Last Tesla announced that the first battery swapping station for the Model S is operating.

Porsche is calling back its most expensive model once again, this time to fix an issue with the chassis.

The recall affects 205 vehicles worldwide. In those cars, defective parts were used from a bad delivery batch, which means Porsche cannot guarantee the parts will hold up in the future. There have been no customer complaints regarding the issue, which was discovered during in-house quality inspections. Porsche did not say specifically which piece would be replaced.

Owners were contacted directly by Porsche to schedule an appointment for sometime in 2015. The whole service will take two days to complete.

The very first brand-new Shelby GT350 will be auctioned off with the proceeds heading to charity.

The car, which uses a 5.2-liter V8, will be auctioned off by Barrett-Jackson on January 17. All of the money raised by the Shelby will go straight to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Revealed at the recent LA Auto Show, the Shelby GT350 will pack over 500 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque along with a screaming high 8,000 rpm or higher redline thanks to a flat-plane crank shaft. The car also gets a standard Torsen limited-slip differential, large Brembo brakes, added aerodynamics and a magnetic ride suspension system.

All of the team members involved in creating the Shelby GT350 will sign the auction car, and the buyer will be able to choose the exterior colors along with the option packages on the car.

When Ford auctioned the first 2015 Mustang GT earlier this year, the company raised $300,000 for charity.

Mercedes Fuel Leak Probe Closed by NHTSA

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has closed a probe looking into Mercedes E-Class vehicles for a fuel leak issue.

To remedy the situation, Mercedes has extended the original warranty coverage to 15 years and unlimited mileage on "Covered Fuel Tank Components," which includes the gas tank, fuel filter/sender, fuel pump, gaskets/seals and retention rings. Owners were complaining of a strong fuel odour right after they would fill the gas tanks of their cars, and NHTSA found that gas can weep or seep through micro-cracks in the fuel filler componenets, causing it to pool or gather on top of the gas tank or other components.

The probe opened in January 2012 after NHTSA received 20 reports of a fuel leak in the 2003-2006 Mercedes E55 AMG, then the probe expanded to all 2003-2008 E-Class vehicles. Many complainants said that fuel was entering the car under the back seat, but NHTSA found that to be untrue. "Contrary to complainant's allegations that fuel entered the inside of their vehicle under the rear seat bench, neither (NHTSA) nor Mercedes found a plausible way for this to occur," NHTSA said.

The organization is "closing this investigation based on the manufacturer's extend warranty of the affected fuel system components and in consideration that the nature of the leaks does not appear to present an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety," said NHSTA.

IIHS Top Safety Picks Nearly Double in 2014

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has handed out its top safety award to nearly double the amount of vehicles compared to last year.

For 2014, 71 vehicles earned the 'Top Safety Pick' title, while the amount of vehicles that qualify for the 'Top Safety Pick Plus' rating increased by 11 to 34 cars. Last year, just 39 cars were given a 'Top Safety Pick' rating.

To qualify as a 'Top Safety Pick,' a vehicle must earn a good or acceptable rating in the small overlap front test and a good rating in each of the Institute's four other crash tests — moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints. To go the extra mile and tack on the 'Plus,' a vehicle must have a front crash prevention system, which can be rated at either basic, advanced or superior.

To test the front crash systems, the IIHS determines whether a vehicle can stop or slow down without driver intervention before hitting a target 12 mph, 25 mph or both.

One reason for the massive growth in 'Top Safety Picks' is the new small overlap crash test. When it was introduced last year, many vehicles performed poorly on the test, which sends the vehicle into a rigid barrier at 40 mph with 25 percent of the front end overlapping it. Now, automakers have had a chance to go back to the drawing board to make sure their vehicles are as safe as possible.

For 2014, the IIHS awarded the 'Top Safety Pick Plus" title to the: Lexus CT200h, Mazda 3, Subaru Impreza, Subaru XV Crosstrek, Toyota Prius, Chrysler 200, Mazda 6, Subaru Legacy, Subaru Outback, Toyota Camry, Toyota Prius V, Acura TLX, Audi A3, BMW 2 Series, Infiniti Q50, Volvo S60, Volvo V60, Toyota Avalon, Acura RLX, Hyundai Genesis, Infiniti Q70 (except V8 four-wheel drive models), Lexus RC, Mercedes E-Class, Volvo S80, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, Mitsubishi Outlander, Subaru Forester, Toyota Highlander, Acura MDX, Lexus NX, Mercedes M-Class, Volvo XC60 and the Toyota Sienna.
