Volvo Plans to Launch Self-Driving Tech by 2021 as a $10K Option

Posted:

Volvo is planning to sell a fully self-driving car within five years and the brand will charge around $10,000 to equip the technology.

Volvo's autopilot will be optional and allow drivers to turn over full control to the vehicle according to CEO Hakan Samuelsson. Volvo is already testing self-driving cars on Swedish roads and by 2017 there will be 100 self-driving XC90s sold to specific customers as part of a pilot program, though the self-driving tech will only be available in certain areas.

Volvo is pushing to offer to offer autopilot by 2021, likely making it one of the first companies to offer a fully self-driving vehicle for sale. Other automakers such as Ford are focusing on bringing self-driving vehicles to ride sharing businesses, rather than selling the cars outright.

Volvo is also in on this market and recently announced a partnership with Uber in Pittsburgh.

Besides being able to spend your time on something other than driving, Volvo also claims that its self-driving vehicles will be up to 50 percent more efficient thanks to a better driving style.

Gallery: Look at All These Neat Cars North Americans Can’t Buy

Posted:

Wandering the floor of the 2016 Paris Motor Show and driving around the streets of Paris, we were constantly reminded of all the cool/weird/obscure cars we can't buy as North Americans.

From Citroens and Peugeots to Suzukis and Renaults, there are many entire brands we can't buy, but there are also a lot of vehicles from automakers like Mercedes, Audi, and BMW that aren't shipped to our shores.

For example, we can't buy an Alfa Romeo Mito or Giulietta, a BMW 1 Series, an Audi Q1, Q2, or RS6 Wagon, a Mercedes-Benz CLA Wagon, Mazda6 Wagon, Ford Fusion Wagon or even an Opel Insignia Wagon. (That's a lot of wagons.)

Flip through the gallery above to check out some of the cars we saw roaming around the Paris Motor Show that North Americans can't buy. And remember, this is just a tiny fraction of cars we saw that we can't get … we ate too many croissants to take more photos.

Top 5 Best Concept Cars from the 2016 Paris Motor Show

Posted:

The 2016 Paris Motor Show is coming to an end and the French automakers really dazzled on their home turf this year.

French automakers are known for getting really creative with their concept car designs, and they didn't disappoint. While other automakers went hyper aggressive with their designs, the French kept it classy with flowing lines and simple proportions.

Here are AutoGuide.com's picks for the best five concepts that debuted at this year's Paris Motor Show.

ALSO SEE: 2016 Paris Motor Show Coverage

5. Volkswagen I.D.

I.D.

Volkswagen is focusing on creating a new identity in its post-Dieselgate world, and electric vehicles are a huge part of that. The I.D. concept revealed in Paris shows an all-new design language that informs how future electric cars from VW will look. The concept is powered by an electric motor with 167 horsepower. The EV will have a driving range of between 248 miles (400 kilometers) to 372 miles (600 km).

4. Hyundai RN30

Hyundan RN30 Concept Paris-15

The Hyundai RN30 concept is exciting because it previews what the Korean automaker's N performance brand has in store. Hyundai doesn't have a performance car now that the Genesis Coupe has been discontinued, so this is our best look at the car that will soon carry that flame. This aggressive-looking concept is powered by high-performance turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which is actually under development for N production models.

3. Lexus UX

Lexus UX COncept

The Lexus UX was a polarizing concept this year, but people definitely agreed that its design was extreme. For better or worse, Lexus is making its cars even more aggressive and angular and this latest concept takes that styling to the next level. The inside is even crazier than the outside, with a design that looks inspired by aliens. A toned-down version of this concept will likely see production sometime in the next year or two.

2. Citroen CXperience

Citroen cXperience

French automaker Citroen debuted a funky-looking wagon concept called the CXperience in Paris and the coolest features are the suicide doors and the unique yellow interior that is contrasted by walnut trim. The concept is a plug-in hybrid with a 300-hp output and has a zero-emissions range of 37 miles. The design mixes elements of wagons and sedans, but it somehow works and was drawing quite the crowd at the Paris show.

1. Renault Treznor

Renault Treznor

Easily the most unique and stunning concept car at this year's show, the Renault Treznor made its global debut in Paris. The concept's proportions are classic, and it looks good from every angle. One of the coolest features, however, is how you get in – the entire top canopy including the wraparound red windshield lifts and moves backwards and you climb in. The French automaker says this concept is all-electric and can be driven fully autonomously. Power output is rated at 350 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque.

UAW Rep Confirms New Ford Ranger, Bronco Will be Built in Michigan

Posted:

A representative for the United Automobile Workers (UAW) has confirmed what has been believed for quite some time: a new Ford Ranger and Bronco are coming and they will be built in the U.S.

"We hate to see the products go to Mexico, but with the Ranger and the Bronco coming to Michigan Assembly that absolutely secures the future for our people a lot more than the Focus does," Bill Johnson, who is the chairman of UAW Local 900 which represents the Wayne plant, told Detroit Free Press.

SEE ALSO: 2017 Ford Raptor's EcoBoost V6 Cranked up to 450 HP

No timeline has been offered for when production of the new midsize pickup truck and SUV would start, though Ford has confirmed that it plans to begin small car production in Mexico by 2018. It is expected that the Ranger will launch first in 2018 with the Bronco coming in 2019 or 2020.

The move of Focus and C-Max production to Mexico has been in the news recently after presidential candidate Donald Trump condemned Ford for moving jobs out of the U.S., though Ford has said all along that no jobs will be lost. Until now, it wasn't clear which products would be moved into Wayne Assembly to take the place of the Focus and C-Max.

2018 Kia Rio Debuts with New 3-Cylinder Engine, More Mature Style

Posted:

The redesigned Kia Rio isn't the most flashy debut at this year's Paris Motor Show, but it is a significant model that a lot of people will actually buy.

The Kia Rio is the Korean automaker's best-selling car worldwide, so this was a big debut for the brand. Kia promises the fourth-generation model is better to drive and that it has more advanced safety features than the one it replaces, all while still being efficient and affordable.

The car has been redesigned to give off a more mature vibe and it has definitely grown up in a lot of ways, besides being physically bigger than the one replaces. That size increase means the hatch has a larger cargo capacity than before.

ALSO SEE: 2016 Paris Motor Show Coverage

The dashboard and center stack controls have also been redesigned and are now angled towards the driver, while Kia's new infotainment interface allowed the number of buttons on the center console to be cut down for a dashboard that's less cluttered. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto will be offered. Kia says the Rio has the most spacious cabin in its class and also that it's also the first car in its class to offer automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection.

North American powertrain details weren't released at the Paris show, but Kia did say it will be powered by a turbo three-cylinder 1.0-litre engine and a diesel motor in other parts of the world. The gas engine gets 100 horsepower and 127 pound-ft of torque and is crazy fuel efficient.

Unfortunately, it's not known if North Americans will get either engine, but do know that the 2018 Kia Rio will go on sale around the world in early 2017.

2017 Audi Q5 Larger, Lighter and Luxurious-er

2017 Audi Q5 Larger, Lighter and Luxurious-er

2017 Audi Q5 Larger, Lighter and Luxurious-er

Posted:

The Q5 crossover has been a huge success for Audi. It's a BIG seller around the world. Pushing this successful nameplate forward they unveiled the redesigned 2017 model at the Paris Motor Show.

As before, it combines the sportiness of a sedan with a roomy, versatile interior. Maximum cargo space measures 21.5 cubic feet, nearly half a cube more than the previous model.

This improvement comes courtesy of larger exterior dimensions; the Q5 has grown slightly in nearly every direction, yet in spite of these increases it's up to 198 pounds lighter than the outgoing version. That's what you call progress.

Helping deliver such an impressive weight loss is a mixed-material body that's made from both steel and aluminum. Naturally, with less mass to haul around this crossover should be more efficient than before. Segment-leading aerodynamics should also help in this area as well and provide best-in-class interior quietness.

Another feature of note is the optional Audi Virtual Cockpit. It impresses with a 12.3-inch display that replaces a traditional instrument cluster. It offers two different view modes including one where the navigation map takes over most of the screen for an immersive experience. And really, there's no excuse for getting lost if you've got this!

Check out our Complete 2016 Paris Auto Show Coverage

Underhood, a wide variety of gasoline and diesel engines will be offered to European customers. The range should be both more economical and powerful than before. A 3.0-liter V6 diesel is the top compression-ignition offering, delivering 286 horsepower. The peak gasoline unit has a capacity of 2.0-liters and provides 252 ponies.

As for transmissions, customers on this side of the Atlantic can get a six-speed manual, a seven-ratio S tronic self-shifter or even an eight-speed tiptronic automatic. As always with Audi, quattro all-wheel drive is available. This world-famous traction-enhancing technology gains a disconnecting rear axle for greater efficiency than before.

The 2017 Audi Q5 is set to go on sale in Europe early next year. The vehicle will be manufactured at a brand new factory in Mexico. Base price should be 45,100€, which is about 51 grand.

Toyota rolled out its latest effort in the motorsports world at the 2016 Paris Motor Show.

This specially prepared Yaris will run in the 2017 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), returning Toyota to WRC racing after being absent for 17 years. While it's always great to see automakers reveal new race cars, the bigger news is the partnership behind the car.

2016 Paris Motor Show Coverage

Toyota also announced its collaboration with Microsoft, which will provide the technology for the new race car. Specifically, the tech company will be responsible for data analysis during testing, creating of an information-sharing system for the Toyota race team and helping to enhance communications with the fans.

"I believe that, like Toyota, Microsoft aims to enrich society in meaningful ways. Based on the on-going partnership, we aim to further develop our people and enhance our cars through the use of IT in motorsports to promote 'ever-better cars,'" said Toyota President Akio Toyoda.

Outside of motorsports, Microsoft is helping the Toyota Research Institute test new artificial intelligence and robotics for automobiles. The goal is to offer "chauffeur mode," a fully autonomous drive mode that will allow the car to pilot itself.

The new race-ready Yaris also carries the logos of DMG MORI and Panasonic, two other companies that have partnered with Toyota to support its return to WRC racing in 2017.

Actual details on the car weren't released, but we already know that Toyota is working on a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine to provide power. Based on the FIA specifications, the engine should make 300 horsepower.

2017 Ford Raptor’s EcoBoost V6 Cranked up to 450 HP

Posted:

It'll be easy to an easy point to miss so we'll put it right up front: The 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor will be more fuel efficient than the previous generation – and 23 percent more efficient at that!

OK, while that's all true, we're sort of kidding about putting that up front because the real headline most care about is the performance numbers of the new Raptor's twin-turbo high-output EcoBoost V6, which need to be impressive since the new engine is replacing the outgoing 6.2-liter V8.

Fortunately they are, and any concern in regards to performance should be laid to rest with the claimed 450 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque rating of the new Raptor.

Ford announced all of the details at the Texas State Fair in Dallas, Texas. Along with the horsepower and torque figures, Ford also noted the new high-output EcoBoost engine in the Raptor delivers a 21 percent improved average torque-to-weight ratio compared to the previous-gen Raptor.

The new truck will also boast Ford's new 10-speed automatic transmission. Ford says the 2017 Raptor has an EPA fuel economy rating of 15 mpg city, 18 mpg highway and 16 mpg combined. Another very interesting number for the new Raptor is the price tag, which Ford says will be just under $50,000 for the base model.

SEE ALSO: 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor Pricing Available, Truck to Start at $49,520

"Raptor was designed to be a no-compromise, off-road performance machine," said Matt Tranter, Ford Performance engineering supervisor. "That is why we made the switch from the cast-iron V8 to the aluminum block, high-output GTDI V6 EcoBoost engine that our team tuned to add 39 horsepower and 76 lb.-ft. of torque for today's Raptor."

2017-ford-f-150-raptor

The new Raptor will be as much as 500 pounds lighter as well, since it incorporates the same aluminum alloy body and fully boxed steel frame first unveiled on the 2015 F-150. The big news in terms of off-road performance is the addition of larger-diameter 3.0 Fox shocks, along with the six-mode Terrain Management System.

The EcoBoost engine gets the lion's share of attention, however, and Ford says the Raptor's uniquely tuned engine features key updates such as more aggressive turbo compressor with increased boost, cast stainless-steel manifolds, a full dual exhaust and oil-cooled pistons along with "more aggressive engine control calibrations." Other updates include a new twin direct and port-fuel injection system, stronger and lighter crank and valvetrain components, a redesigned twin turbocharger system with electronic wastegate, a redesigned valvetrain and variable-displacement oil pump.

"Looking at the torque curve of the Raptor's EcoBoost engine, you see the twin turbos spool quicker for faster time to torque – it hammers quick and keeps delivering torque for a more brawny feel than its V8 predecessor," said Al Cockerill, Raptor's powertrain development engineer.

A great deal of attention was also paid to the new 10-speed, which Ford says will include it Start-Stop feature along with an integrated electric pump to improve driving efficiency. Ford says this closer gear ratio on the 10-speed automatics trans helps optimize the power and torque curves of the 3.5L high-output EcoBoost V6. Ford also says the Raptor uses all-new adaptive shift algorithms to monitor powertrain and driver controls signals to ensure the truck is in the right gear at the proper time. Ford also notes the new 10-speed gearbox is the first from Ford to not employ cast-iron components, and therefore its advanced-material construction helps reduce weight.

Audi RS3 LMS Makes Racing an Audi Cheaper Than Ever

Posted:

Audi has rolled out a new race car at the 2016 Paris Motor Show offering customers a cheaper way to get into motorsport behind the wheel of an Audi.

The new RS3 LMS has been developed for customer racing in the relatively new TCR category, a quickly growing motorsport class.

"The TCR market has even larger potential than that of the GT3 category," says Chris Reinke, Head of Audi Sport customer racing. "In 2016, there were ten TCR series with races in 18 countries, and more and more series are being added. With the TCR version of the RS 3 we're also reaching countries where no GT3 races are held. The costs for a TCR race car are very low."

2016 Paris Motor Show Coverage

The new RS3 LMS will be available for the 2017 race season. To conform to TCR regulations, the race car will use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 330 horsepower, less than the 400 hp that can be had in the road-going Audi RS3.

SEE ALSO: Audi RS3 Will Hit US in 2017 With 400-HP Five Cylinder

Sprinting from 0 to 62 mph will take 4.5 seconds while top speed for the car is limited to 149 mph (240 km/h).

A full safety kit is provided with the race car including an FIA-spec safety fuel tank, a racing safety cell, the PS3 safety seat, FIA safety nets on both sides of the seat and a rescue hatch in the roof like the one used in the Audi R8 LMS.

Pricing for the race car starts at 99,000 Euros for the Club Sport version while it climbs up to 129,000 Euros for the TCR-ready version. Deliveries will begin in December of this year.

Ram Rebel TRX Concept Ready for Desert Running with 575 HP

Posted:

The new Ram Rebel TRX Concept is a supercharged beast ready to run flat-out on the trails.

At the State Fair of Texas, Ram rolled out the concept truck, powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that makes 575 horsepower. It's hooked into an eight-speed automatic transmission, just like the standard Ram, though that is where the similarities end.

To handle it's new found off-road power, the TRX Concept is fitted with a BorgWarner 44-45 transfer case, custom CV half-shafts to handle the wider track, aggressive 37-inch tires, beadlock wheels and a Dynatrac Pro 60 axle in the rear with an electric locker. Ram says that the suspension travel has been increased by 40 percent while overall front- and rear-wheel travel has been increased to over 13 inches.

Ram Rebel TRX Concept

New 2.5-inch bypass shocks are fitted to help with heat dissipation while Baer six-piston monoblock calipers using 15-inch rotors grab the front tires, while the rears are stopped by six-piston calipers on 14-inch rotors. In case anything goes wrong out on the trail, Ram has fit the concept with two full-size spare tires with custom tools and jack located in a new storage container in the bed.

SEE ALSO: The Mopar '16 Special Edition is a Dressed Up Ram Rebel

Additional airflow for the supercharger was important, so the front end of this truck has a scooped grille while composite fender flares help to compensate for the big tires. A lower brush guard, custom hood and LED clearance lighting also help to make this truck look menacing. Massive five-inch side-exit exhaust pipes don't hurt either.

Inside, suede with accent mesh cloth seats were chosen to help increase comfort but also to hug passengers, a duty also taken on by additional bolstering. TRX badges are found throughout along with muddy track graphics, much like the Ram Rebel offers. Six-point harnesses are also found in all four seats to really keep passengers in place when hitting the desert.

It's pretty clear that Ram wants to prove that it can take on the Ford Raptor when it comes to desert running. Only problem is that the Raptor is actually being built while this Ram is just a concept. Come on FCA. You know what to do.

3-Row 2018 Land Rover Discovery Makes Debut with Busy Families in Mind

Posted:

The redesigned 2018 Land Rover Discovery made its debut at the Paris Motor Show with a lot of features designed for busy families.

The fifth-generation Discovery will replace the LR4 and its design does away with the boxy look Land Rovers are famous for in favor of an entirely new look that's more streamlined. The new Discovery is also a staggering 1,000 pounds lighter than the outgoing LR4, thanks to extensive use of aluminum.

The new Discovery is powered by either a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 with 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque or a turbocharged 3.0L diesel V6 with 254 hp and a generous 443 lb-ft of torque, online from as low as 1,750 rpm. Both engines are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

ALSO SEE: Full Paris Motor Show Coverage

With its three rows of seating, Land Rover promises that each seat is "the best seat in the house," even in the typically cramped third row, which the British automaker says will have enough headroom and legroom to make it suitable for most adults.

One of the stand-out interior features is an industry-first new seat folding system that allows people to reconfigure the second and third row of seats safely and electronically using controls at the rear of the SUV, via the central touchscreen, or remotely using a smartphone app. All three rows are also available with heated seats, while the first two rows can also be cooled. Massaging seats are available for the driver and front passenger.

2018 Land Rover Discovery-08

The Discovery also has more storage cubbies throughout the cabin, and a massive 82.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity with all the seats folded flat and 45 cu-ft behind the second row. With all three rows in use, 9.1 cu-ft of space remains behind the third row. A one-piece tailgate also breaks Discovery tradition, replacing the split-tailgate design.

The Discovery comes equipped with up to nine USB ports, six 12-volt charging ports, and 3G wifi that can host up to eight devices. It also gets the same waterproof Activity Key wristband like the Jaguar F-Pace that allows drivers to use it to lock the SUV and disable the regular key, which can then be safely left inside so they don't have to worry about damaging it.

The full-time four-wheel-drive Disco has a 8,201-lb towing capacity, and, of course, it wouldn't be a Land Rover if it couldn't off-road. Ground clearance is rated at 11.1 inches and the SUV and wade in water up to 35.4 inches deep, both figures that beat the outgoing LR4. All the latest off-road driving assistants are also available and a two-speed transfer box can be used to swap between high and low ratios while the SUV is still in motion.

The 2018 Land Rover Discovery is available with all the latest driver assistance technology like adaptive cruise control, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, parking assist, blind spot monitoring and more, and will arrive at dealerships in mid-2017. Pricing starts at $49,990 in the U.S.

Volkswagen I.D. Concept Promises up to 370 Miles of All-Electric Range

Posted:

Volkswagen has set a goal of selling 25 million electric cars by 2025 and the new I.D. Concept is the very first signpost revealing what the brand's new range of EVs will be like.

The I.D. is wearing an entirely new design DNA which VW will use with its electric cars to set them apart moving forward. Powering the concept is an electric motor with 167 horsepower which will be capable of travelling between 248 miles (400 kilometers) to 372 miles (600 kms).

On the inside, the concept has a new "spatial experience" that Volkswagen calls Open Space. No photos of the interior have been revealed but the name does seem self explanatory.

VW expects to sell a production version of the I.D. by 2020, while a fully autonomous drive mode is said to be available by 2025. When the I.D. is driving itself, its steering wheel will be able to tuck back into the dashboard.

Finally, Volkswagen says that the I.D. will be able to receive parcels using a delivery service if the owner of the car isn't at home.

This will be Volkswagen's first car based on the Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) platform, which will spawn a lineup of EVs in the future.

Posted:

Which compact car do YOU prefer, the Chevy Cruze or Hyundai Elantra? Vote in our latest poll!

Redesigned for 2016, the new Chevy Cruze is about 250 pounds lighter than its predecessor, which is an astounding achievement for a compact car. This reduction pays major dividends, helping improve both performance and efficiency.

This bow-tie offering is motivated by a standard 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. With direct injection it musters an impressive 153 horsepower and 177 lb-ft torque. Drivers can choose between a manual or automatic transmission, both of which have six forward speeds.

Stop-start technology boosts the MPG, helping this car return up to 40 miles per gallon on the highway. Despite its efficiency, the Cruze is still plenty potent, hitting 60 miles an hour in as little as 7.7 seconds.

Keeping technophiles happy, both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are offered, as is a range of advanced driver-assistance systems. Things like blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist and forward collision warning are available.

Not to be outdone, Hyundai's Elantra sedan offers much of the same technology, from pedestrian detection to rear cross-traffic alert to lane-keep assist and more. As you'd expect, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both on the options menu.

The standard engine in this car is a 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle four-cylinder unit that delivers 147 horses and 132 lb-ft of twist. A 1.4-liter turbo is also offered, which sees duty in Eco versions of the Elantra.

When equipped with a six-speed automatic gearbox (a manual with the same number of ratios is also available) this economical Hyundai stickers at 28 miles per gallon city, 37 highway and 32 MPG combined.

Both of these compact cars are winners in the segment, offering loads of technology, sophistication and cutting-edge technology. Which one do YOU prefer? Feel free to compare them directly here and don't forget to vote down below!

Nissan’s Strange Obsession with Autonomous Chairs Strikes Again

Nissan’s Strange Obsession with Autonomous Chairs Strikes Again

Posted:

Nissan is starting to show its love for autonomous chairs.

After unveiling the self-parking office chair earlier this year, the Japanese automaker has introduced the ProPILOT Chair, named after the company's flagship autonomous driving technology. Like the driving technology found in Nissan's vehicles, the ProPILOT Chair detects and automatically follows the chair ahead of it, maintaining a fixed distance while travelling along a set path. Designed to appeal to those that have had to wait in line for hours outside a crowded restaurant, the ProPILOT Chair essentially eliminates the tedium and physical strain of standing in line.

The company is conducting plenty of real-world testing with the chair and between now and December 27, restaurants across Japan can apply to use the chairs by tweeting their name and website along with the hashtags #NissanProPilotChair #Wanted. The chairs will appear at selected restaurants starting next year, but in the meantime, people can check it out from September 29 through October 2 at the public gallery at Nissan's Global Headquarters in Yokohama.

Nissan's ProPILOT driving technology is currently only available in Japan on the redesigned Serena.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Facelift Caught Testing on AMG S63 Variant

Posted:

More details on the upcoming Mercedes-Benz S-Class facelift have surfaced.

First spied testing earlier this year, photographers have now caught both the standard S-Class model and the Mercedes-AMG S63 testing in Southern Europe. The latest prototypes now sport the new tail lights with updated graphics as well as a camouflaged rear bumper. Up front, the new bumper is still heavily camouflaged on both the standard and S63 models, but we get a clearer picture on how the headlights will look on the standard model.

The AMG prototype being tested appears to be an early one, since the current headlights are still being used. As a result, for now, only the bumpers are camouflaged for the high-performance variant.

An earlier leaked roadmap revealed that the facelifted S-Class is planned for release by mid-2017.

Buick Envision is First Chinese-Built Vehicle in IIHS Crash Testing, Scores Top Marks

Posted:

The new Chinese-built Buick Envision has been given the highest accolade possible from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Named a Top Safety Pick Plus, the Buick Envision is the first Chinese-built vehicle to be tested by the agency ever. With top 'good' ratings in the small overlap, moderate overlap, front crash, side crash and head restraint tests along with an 'advanced' rating for its Front Automatic Braking, the Envision took the top honor. The Envision's standard Forward Collision Alert system earned a basic rating.

When equipped with the automatic braking feature, the Envision avoided a collision at 12 mph during testing while a reduction of 9 mph was recorded when the Envision was run into something at 25 mph.

Nissan Plots Compact EV Smaller Than Leaf

Posted:

Nissan, like so many other automakers, is planning to bolster its all-electric vehicle lineup.

According to Auto Express, the Japanese brand is planning a compact electric vehicle based on the Renault Zoe, a small electric vehicle that can currently run about 90 miles on a single charge. A Nissan executive also said that electrified SUVs and crossovers are being investigated.

"We've invested $5.4bn (£4.1bn) in electric cars such as the Leaf, so we need to ensure we're satisfying as many types of customer as possible," said the head of Nissan's EV program in Europe. "In Europe, that could mean looking towards B-segment hatches [Ford Fiesta size] and SUVs or crossovers."

The Nissan Leaf will be continued into a next generation and will likely keep its five-door hatchback style and proportions. Exactly what the crossover could be is a mystery, though if a small electric subcompact arrives from Nissan, it will likely be based on the Zoe.

Audi S8 Spied Lurking Near the Nurburgring

Posted:

The next-generation Audi S8 has been spied testing for the very first time.

Spy photographers caught the Audi S8 prototype testing near the Nurburgring, just like the Audi S7 last week. Expected to debut sometime late next year, the new S8 will pack plenty of high-tech features including Piloted Driving. Under the hood, it is likely that the Audi S8 will turn to the same powerplant found in the Porsche Panamera 4S, which is a 2.9-liter V6 with 440 horsepower.

Although it is still heavily camouflaged, we can see that the luxury sedan sports massive brakes and wheels, as well as sportier bumpers than the standard A8, which has also been caught on camera by spy photographers.

The next-generation Audi A8 will make its debut in 2017, ahead of the high-performance S8 variant. Audi CEO Rupert Stadler confirmed earlier this year that the A8 will be the German automaker's first series-produced car capable of driving itself. It won't be a fully autonomous vehicle, however, but Audi's system will be a traffic jam pilot and will be able to drive itself temporarily on the highway at speeds up to 37 mph (60 km/h).

Nissan Teams with Microsoft on Connected Car Tech

Posted:

Technology giant Microsoft has joined up with the Renault-Nissan Alliance to develop next-generation automotive technology.

Microsoft will connect Nissan's future cars using its Azure intelligent cloud, allowing the vehicles to have advanced navigation, predictive maintenance, remote monitoring of car features and over-the-air updates.

"Partnering with Microsoft allows us to accelerate the development of the associated key technologies needed to enable scenarios our customers want and build all-new ones they haven't even imagined," said Ogi Redzic, Renault-Nissan Alliance senior vice-president of connected vehicles.

Features developed with Microsoft will also support the launch of Nissan's self-driving cars, which the brand still plans to market by 2020.

Nissan lists seven specific ways that the partnership will improve the ownership experience. First is how customizable future cars will be thanks to information inputted and collected from the driver. Productivity will be up according to Nissan thanks to new connectivity features, while over-the-air updates will allow for new software to be added to the cars at any time.

Easy ways to communicate are another focus of the partnership, as is monitoring your car from a distance using a smart phone or similar device. Vehicle protection will be upgraded thanks to Geofencing, a technology that allows the car to send notifications when it enters or exits a predefined area or route.
