Karma Revero Officially Reborn with $130K Starting Price Posted: Karma Automotive has officially launched the Revero, which starts at $130,000. Based on the Fisker Karma, the Karma Revero is still a plug-in hybrid luxury sedan, but its new pricing is a bit of a leap compared to the previous Karma, which started at $103,000. While the car retains much of the same design and a turbocharged four-cylinder engine sourced from GM with 260 horsepower, its electric powertrain has been revamped with DC fast charging at 40 kW now available. The onboard charger has also been upgraded from 3.3 kW to 6.6 kW. The Karma Revero will continue to use A123 battery cells, but capacity has increased slightly from 20.4 kWh to 21.4 kWh, providing an all-electric range of about 50 miles (80 kilometers). The zero-to-60 time is estimated to be 5.4 seconds, while the top speed will be electronically limited to 125 mph (201 km/h). SEE ALSO: Fisker Karma Reborn as Karma Revero A brochure on the car has been posted on the company's website, highlighting that the solar roof remains on the Revero. The roof can supposedly "generate up to 1.5 miles of electric range per day, depending on weather conditions." The brochure also shows off the updated and more luxurious interior, which should help warrant the price increase. There is also a new infotainment system that is capable of receiving over-the-air updates like Tesla vehicles, and one of the first updates will enable Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Production for the Karma Revero will start at the end of the year with an estimated 900 units produced in its first year. U.S. Volkswagen Engineer Charged in Diesel Probe Posted: A criminal charge has been laid in the U.S. Justice Department's probe into the Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal. A Volkswagen engineer pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges in a U.S. District Court in Detroit today, Reuters reports. The veteran engineer, identified by Bloomberg as James Liang, pleaded guilty and entered a plea agreement. A DOJ spokesperson says part of the agreement includes having the engineer assist the government's investigation into the automaker's emissions cheating. Liang, 62, has worked for the automaker since 1983 and was reportedly part of the team that developed the defeat device-equipped diesel engines. He left Germany to work for Volkswagen's U.S. operations in 2008, around the time that the emissions-cheating 2.0-liter TDI models were being readied for sale. ALSO SEE: Majority of Volkswagen TDI Owners Are Picking the Buyback Liang is charged with conspiracy to commit fraud against U.S. regulators and customers, and could face five years in prison. The indictment alleges that Liang conspired with past and current engineers to mislead government regulators. The engineer is reportedly cooperating with authorities, which now puts the heat on executives at the company. According to Reuters, charges were laid against Liang in June, but the indictment was only made public today. Volkswagen has already agreed to spend up to $16.5-billion to compensate U.S. owners and environmental regulators, as well as settle some state-level fines. A total of 475,000 2.0-liter diesel models are subject to a buyback program in the U.S. |
Did a Photo of the Next-Generation Toyota Camry Just Leak? Posted: A photo has appeared online that may show us what the next-generation 2018 Toyota Camry could look like. A new-generation 2018 Toyota Camry should be revealed sometime next year, and spy photographers have caught the popular family sedan testing, but there has been so much camouflage that we haven't been able to make out any styling changes. Naturally, many would assume the Camry would retain its familiar, unoffensive design, but this leaked photo shows that Toyota might be going in a very different direction. In general, Toyota has tried to make its lineup look sportier, and the new design language will definitely make its way onto the new Camry. ALSO SEE: 2016 Toyota Camry Review Spotted on VW Vortex, a forum in the AutoGuide.com Group family of sites, this photo was taken at some sort of NASCAR event and it shows an aggressive-looking Toyota Camry. Because of NASCAR's close ties with Toyota, they could have gotten expedited access to then next-gen 2018 Toyota Camry for development purposes. This particular Camry has obviously been modified for racing in NASCAR, but the front grille hasn't been seen before, and we think we can make out a "2018 Camry" decal on the side of the sedan, meaning, minus the race modifications, this could be the real deal. The new grille seems to be influenced by the divisive Lexus "spindle grille," and LED light bar headlights with an interesting tiered design can also be seen in the grainy photo. The 2018 Toyota Camry will be built on the modular TNGA platform, which means weight savings will be significant and a hybrid version will definitely be available. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine will almost certainly be offered as well (currently, the Camry is only offered with a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder and 3.5L V6). We can also expect the next Camry to be slightly larger and be available with all the latest driver assistance technology like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keep assist.
