Middleburg, VA — One of the most understated product launches in recent memory, that showcasing the mid-cycle freshening of Volkswagen's Jetta sedan for 2015, instantly calls to mind the aphorism generally attributed to German-American architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe: "God is in the details."

The story for the compact four-door is, notes VW Canada, one of "refinement." Indeed, there are copious detail changes to this model — very important to the company in that it's the best-selling VW in Canada — everything from the revised front and rear fascias (contributing to improved aerodynamics and lower fuel consumption) to a number of upgrades to the engines, safety systems and cabin. The only thing is, except to the particularly observant or the most fanatical of Jetta cognoscenti, the car looks very much the same as last year's model.

The single biggest change is not in esthetics, though, but what's under the hood. Acolytes of fuel-efficient diesels in general and VW's diesel engines in particular (In Canada, about 30 per cent of VW sales are diesel models) will be excited by an all-new 2.0-litre turbocharged TDI Clean Diesel four-cylinder (designated EA288), a robust unit now pumping out 150 horsepower (at 3,500 rpm) — 10 more horses than last year's diesel engine — and 236 lb.-ft. of torque between 1,750 and 3,000 rpm.

Unfortunately, the routes around Middleburg, Virginia — through the rolling hills and horse country of what is one of the wealthiest counties in the United States — left little chance to explore the full capabilities of the various 2015 Jettas available to drive. With strict warnings to stick to the posted speed limits, including the admonition to watch out for the local law enforcement, we were stuck to sampling the American-spec'd cars at speeds between 40 and 80 km/h.

What I could discern was that there's certainly more oomph to the Clean Diesel four-cylinder when giving the accelerator a prod. Typically, the engine is a little rattle-y when cold, but settles into a low thrum once warmed up and during steady acceleration. The electro-mechanical steering is heavier than in the 1.8-litre gas Jetta, likely a function of the diesel engine's added weight. That said, the car — no matter which engine — was easy to drive on the twisting roads. Road noise on the smooth tarmac was audible albeit muted.

At launch, two gasoline engines are available. The normally aspirated 2.0-litre engine found in the base Trendline trim level ($14,990) is a carryover and puts out a piddling 115 hp. New last year, the optional and more sophisticated engine remains the 1.8L TSI. It delivers a far more rewarding 170 horsepower and 184 lb.-ft. of torque thanks to direct injection and turbocharging. Certainly, it imbued the Jetta with a lively nature if not the sport of the GLI. Speaking of which, the GLI as well as the 1.4-litre turbocharged Jetta Hybrid will appear later in the model year.

As for visual cues, the key design elements of the revised Jetta include bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights and adaptive front-lighting system (depending on the trim and package), an extension of the wheelbase that now stretches to 2,652 millimetres, rear-seat legroom of 968 mm, a subtle curve to the roofline that enables headroom of 942 mm for rear-seat passengers, a commodious 15.5 cubic feet of usable trunk space and a new front face — including active grill shutters a revised bumper — that helps reduce air drag. As for rear-seat room, after setting my front seat to fit my 6-foot-2 frame, I couldn't get into the rear without jamming my knees into the backrest. However, occupants of more normal dimensions should find the accommodations adequate for their needs.

Beyond the exterior tweaking, a number of safety features are now available, depending on the trim level. A blind spot monitor provides a visual warning of potential collisions. It's coupled with an audible rear traffic alert, which aids in detecting vehicles approaching from the rear and sides of the car — a feature especially useful when backing out of tight parking spots with limited visibility. It will even apply the brakes proactively to help avoid collisions. The Jetta's forward collision warning system utilizes radar sensors to alert drivers of potential contact with vehicles ahead by way of visual and audible signals.

The one area that is somewhat disappointing is the interior. On the positive front, it is comfortable and relatively quiet, and there's more application of piano-black trim and chrome accents. Also, depending on the trim level, there's all the modern conveniences one should expect for a car in its price class. But, the cabin itself is still dull and dated — particularly the small navigation screen and the difficult-to-read instruments (depending on light conditions). It's very much a case of form follows function.

The compact sedan segment is large and highly competitive, with a lot of choice for demanding consumers. Volkswagen has been highly selective in its improvements for the Jetta, upgrades that might appear too subtle for those looking for flash and gee-whiz. If given a closer inspection, though, the detail changes all work to the car's benefit — especially if fuel economy is a high priority.

Available in dealerships now, the 2015 Jetta starts at $14,990 for the base 2.0L Trendline and tops out at $28,290 for the 2.0 TDI Clean Diesel Highline.

  1. In reviews, I've found the Jetta to be a fairly refined, roomy and comfortable compact sedan. Depending on the year, it's also available in a wagon body style.
