Honda's 10th generation Civic could be closer than you think.

New spy photos of a prototype testing in the U.S. biggest that the company is already testing a replacement to the current model, which is struggling against better-equipped compact cars. The next Civic is expected to be a global car based on a scalable platform that will also underpin the Accord.

Rumor has it Honda is planning to produce the global civic in the U.S. If that turns out to be true, it could mean higher performing versions of the Civic currently reserved for Japan and Europe being sold in North America as well.

The prototype in these pictures has a fastback design, but if you look closely there are lines visible that indicate a trunk rather than a hatchback  design.

Honda is disappointed enough in how the current Civic is selling to give it an unprecedented two quick turnaround refreshes since it launched in 2011 for the 2012 model year.  The first brought mild exterior styling tweaks and improved equipment while the second change swapped its conventional automatic for a continuously variable transmission.

This prototype showed up sooner than we expected to see it, so it's difficult to guess when Honda intends to launch a replacement to the ninth-generation car.

A few weeks ago we published a Top 10 list focusing on some of our favorite in-production vehicles that are getting on in years. In spite of their geriatric status these cars and trucks are aging gracefully, still capable of plastering a big ol' grin across the lower portion of your face.

But enough holding hands and singing Kumbaya, now it's time to take a drive on the darker side. What older vehicles have overstayed their welcome on the market? Which ones should be euthanized as soon as possible in order to spare the driving public from their abject terribleness? Click ahead if you dare. Hopefully you're not parking one of these wrecks in your garage, or worse, making monthly payments on one.

Jaguar EV-Type Trademark Filed in US, Europe

Jaguar Land Rover has filed to trademark a new nameplate in the U.S. and Europe that could signal plans for a new model.

The company filed applications to both offices aiming to trademark the name "EV-Type." The filing doesn't include more detailed information about the company's plans, but the "-Type" designation is currently only being used on the "F-Type" sports car. In the early 2000's the company marketed both S-Type and X-Type sedans, so Jaguar hasn't always used "-Type" name for sports cars, but that is currently the case.

That could point to the company taking early steps in preparation for an alternative fuel version of its sports car. At the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, the company showed the C-X16 concept, a hybrid-electric sports car that turned out to be a precursor for the F-Type sports car, which is currently powered by V6 and V8 gasoline engines. The C-X16 concept used a 375-hp V6 in combination with an electric motor that offers another 95 hp. At the time, Jaguar said the concept could reach 62 MPH (100 km/h) in 4.4 seconds.

Jaguar hasn't said anything official about plans for an electrified or hybrid version of the F-Type yet. The company is about to introduce an all-wheel drive version of the sports car next week during the L.A. Auto Show along with the option for a manual transmission. But offering a more fuel efficient performance option could be important if not essential to the brand as a means of improving CAFE scores. Jaguar spokesman Wayne Kung declined to comment on the filing citing a policy against speaking about future products.

There is also currently a rumor circulating that JLR sister brand Land Rover is also considering competing with Tesla by offering a battery-powered Range Rover model. If that is true, the company is probably also looking for ways to spread development costs over multiple nameplates between the Jaguar and Land Rover brands.

First 2015 Corvette Z06 Leaves Assembly Line

Yesterday the first 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 rolled off the assembly line in Bowling Green, Ky., but you shouldn't expect to see them prowling a street near you very soon.

Production is going on at a rate of seven per hour and – aside from the first car that went directly to Rick Hendrick – aren't being sent to dealers yet. Corvette spokesman Monte Doran told AutoBlog that Chevrolet is still performing final quality checks before it is ready for a wholesale release.

As a refresher, the new Z06 makes 650 hp, 650 lb-ft of torque and launches to 60 MPH in 2.95 seconds with a quarter mile time of 10.95 seconds at 127 MPH. Those numbers count the car with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The car wears massive 285/30ZR19 front tires and 335/25ZR20 rear tires made possible by the Z06 being 2.2 inches wider in the front and 3.15 inches wider in the rear. Among the many other performance parts, the car also comes with standard magnetic ride control shocks and an electronic limited-slip differential.

Scion iM Revealed as a Sporty 5-Door Hatchback

After the success of the FR-S, Scion appears to be keeping its focus on sporty models with the reveal of a new concept car targeted at younger buyers.

Called the iM, the brand's new five-door hatchbach gets dramatic styling mixed with the functionality that a hatch can offer.

Scion says the car's design is inspired by European touring cars with a low-slung body, big air intakes, geometric grille inserts and big 19-inch wheels. Also shown on the car are huge 19-inch wheels with performance tires, vented front brake rotors with 4-piston calipers and a height-adjustable racing suspension.

It's also painted in a custom "Incrediblue" shade.

No details have been released on the powertrain, though this isn't likely to be a hot hatch. Instead look for a more modest engine, like the 1.8-liter 4-cylinder from the Corolla, under the hood.

The iM is technically a concept car, but is expected to see production soon with its underpinnings likely shared with the European market Toyota Auris. Just don't expect to see many of the more extreme elements of the car at that point.

"The tastes of today's younger buyers have evolved. They want a car that provides excitement and individuality, as well as the comfort, technology and reliability that Scion offers," said Scion Vice President Doug Murtha. "The iM Concept combines sleek styling with the versatility of a modern hatchback to catch the eye of Scion customers. Stay tuned for more on how we will bring this vision to the road."

Scion will officially reveal the car at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Wednesday, November 19th.
