2012 Subaru Impreza Under NHTSA Investigation for Airbag Issue

Posted:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an investigation on the Subaru Impreza.

The investigation will focus on a possible issue with the vehicle's Occupant Detection System, which is used to identify whether the occupant in the passenger seat is full sized or a child. That system is responsible of turning off the airbag deployment if necessary.

NHTSA has received 26 complaints on possible issues with the Occupant Detection System, saying that it was incorrectly turning off the airbag deployment when a full-sized adult was in the front passenger seat. The Japanese automaker had put out a Technical Service Bulletin in May 2012 to address a similar problem.

2016 Hyundai Elantra Spied Inside and Out

Posted:

Our spy photographers have grabbed some photos of the next-generation Hyundai Elantra sedan during testing.

Due to be revealed at the end of 2015, the redesigned Elantra's styling will be similar to the updated 2015 Sonata and Genesis. That means more angular looks, also previewed by the refreshed 2016 Elantra GT.

One or both of the current engines, a 1.8- and 2.0-liter four cylinder, may carry over to the 2016 car. To offer a more fuel efficient option, the Elantra might adopt a 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder mated to a seven-speed dual clutch transmission, the same powertrain found in the Sonata Eco.

Goodyear Launching Online Sales Service

Posted:

Goodyear is launching a new service that will allow the public to buy tires directly from the manufacturer.

Phase one of the program is being rolled out this week according to Goodyear CEO Rich Kramer. "As you likely heard, Goodyear will become the first tire manufacturer in the U.S. to start selling consumer replacement tires online," said Kramer. "In fact, we will launch the first phase of our rollout this week. This new buying option will allow consumers to purchase tires online and have them installed by authorized dealers." Kramer did not elaborate on exactly what phase one entails.

"The preference for buying goods and services online — often through mobile devices — is being driven by a new generation of consumers," said Kramer. "In the U.S. alone, 80 million Millennials with $1 trillion in buying power are entering the market. By embracing digital technology to simplify the tire buying process — and keeping our network of aligned dealers as an integral part of the process — we believe we will be the industry leader in this space and with these new consumers," he said.

Those interested in buying tires will be able to visit Goodyear.com, input their vehicle details and the site will provide a list of the best tire options. The full price of the tire can then be paid for online, though dealers won't be completely shut out of the deal.

Buyers will have to choose a Goodyear dealer to receive their tires. That dealer will be compensated by the company with a flat delivery commission, based on the type of tire. All mounting and balancing fees will also go to the dealer.

Goodyear says that thousands of U.S. dealers have already signed up to be part of the service.

Watch the AMG GT3 Tear up the ‘Ring

Posted:

Mercedes' latest race car looked good under the lights at the Geneva Motor Show, but it looks much better going flat out at the race track.

Youtube user nordschleife96 captured great footage of the AMG GT3, the successor to the SLS GT3, testing at Germany's famous Nurburgring Nordschleife.

Unlike the road-going AMG GT, this race car uses a 6.2-liter V8 for motivation, hooked up to a six-speed manual race transmission. The German brand chose to pass on the new turbocharged V8 found in the GT in favor of the high-revving, reliable naturally aspirated engine.

As with most modern race cars, carbon fiber is used to construct the roll cage, side skirts, seat pan and just about everything else.
