Verizon Vehicle Offers to ‘Connect’ Older Cars Posted: Verizon Wireless will soon offer drivers with older vehicles the option to retrofit their car with modern connectivity. The cellular giant said on Tuesday in Detroit that it will offer a new service called "Verizon Vehicle" that will be able to diagnose vehicle problems, dispatch tow trucks and connect a mechanic to the car. The service, which spent the past two years in development, costs $14.99 per month and sends subscribers a monthly vehicle health report. Verizon Vehicle has the potential to spread many of the connected services packaged with new vehicles to the roughly 200 million older automobiles sold before Internet connections and GPS were mainstays in the market. It is compatible with vehicles up to 19 years old and connects to the car using the OBD-II port underneath the dashboard along with a speakerphone that attaches to the sun visor. Later Verizon may add more features including turn-by-turn directions and a concierge service similar to GM's OnStar, but for now it will focus on enhancing safety and simplifying vehicle maintenance. Currently, Verizon provides telematics services to several automakers including Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen. |

Jeep CEO Still Wants Wrangler Pickup Truck Posted: Jeep's top brass is still looking favorably on the idea of a Wrangler-based pickup truck. CEO Mike Manley said that he is in favor of the idea during an interview with Caradvice.com.au at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, but that he hasn't justified a business case for offering such a model. Jeep is currently developing the next-generation Wrangler, which will have a body made of aluminum much like the new Ford F-150 pickup truck. SEE ALSO: 2018 Jeep Wrangler to Gain Eight-Speed Auto Jeep recorded an especially strong performance in 2014, selling a record-shattering 692,348 vehicles, of which the Wrangler accounted for 25.3 percent. Offering a pickup truck variant could help Jeep spread development costs while opening new doors for further sales expansion, but Manley said such a move could potentially damage Ram pickup sales. Jeep considered offering a truck version of the Wrangler in the past, but shelved the idea rather than risking cannibalizing Dodge truck volume.
