Goodyear Reveals New Tire Concepts at Geneva

It's not just vehicle concepts that debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, automotive-related products also have their time to shine.

This year, tire manufacturer Goodyear unveiled two tire concepts that preview technologies that could radically change how we think of tires in the near future. The first tire concept is called the BHO3 and is capable of generating electricity. This is possible through the high tech materials that make up the tire. It can capture and transform energy created by heat when the tire flexes during normal driving conditions. The idea of the tire brings up the possibility of charging the batteries of electric vehicles.

The other tire concept is called the Triple Tube. This concept features three internal tubes located beneath the tread and near the inboard and outboard shoulders of the tire, as well as the center. By relying on an internal pump moving air from the main chamber to the three individual air chambers or tubes, the tire is capable of automatically adjusting on its own based on road conditions to three different positions. One position is called the Eco/Safety position, which maximizes inflation in all three tubes to reduce rolling resistance. Another is the Sporty position, which reduces inflation within the inboard shoulder tube to give drivers better dry handling performance. The last position is the Wet Traction position, where the maximized inflation is i the center tube to provide high aquaplaning resistance through a raised tread in the center of the tire.

"These concept tires reimagine the role that tires may play in the future," said Joe Zekoski, Goodyear's senior vice president and chief technical officer. "We envision a future in which our products become more integrated with the vehicle and the consumer, more environmentally friendly and more versatile."

The five available roles will cover vehicle dynamics, vehicle design, aerodynamics and electronics and those applying to the Performance Engineering Academy are expected to have relevant academic backgrounds. Each candidate will go through a three-stage process that begins by submitting their resume and a video answering the question "Why do I deserve this opportunity?" An in-depth profile analysis will then be conducted by Infiniti and Infiniti Red Bull Racing senior management along with a Skype interview. From there, the company will select 10 in each market to attend their regional finals to complete a series of engineering and teamwork tasks, judged by an expert panel.

"We're looking for engineers who are technically very strong, but they need to excel in other areas too," explained Adrian Newey, chief technical officer, Infiniti Red Bull Racing. "Whether you're designing and building road cars or working in Formula One, the ability to think laterally, creatively and operate seamlessly within a team are crucial. The entry-level McLaren model is set for a New York Auto Show debut, but that won't stop the British sportscar maker from teasing its new darling one more time.

This video played at the end of the the brands press conference in Geneva, giving us the best view of McLaren's 911 Turbo fighter yet. Just 20 seconds long, we can see that the car uses a familiar front-fascia as the new 675LT and P1, but a slightly updated, rounded rear end.

During the press conference, McLaren Chief Executive Officer, Mike Flewitt explained that the company will have three tiers of cars. We already know the "Super Series" which includes the 675LT and 650S. The company also defined its "Ultimate Series" which is made up of the McLaren P1 and P1 GTR. The Sport Series will round out the selection with a range of more affordable models. It's expected to cost around $200,000.

Rumors have hinted that a a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 will power the Sport Series with an output of over 500 hp. In order to keep costs down, the Sport Series likely won't have the active aerodynamics or adaptive suspension setup like the 650S. Check out the video below to see the prototype model frolicking in the snow.

Toyota has revealed its new Auris, a vehicle that is on its way to North America with new badges.

Shown at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, the facelifted Auris previews the Scion iM which will make its official debut at the New York Auto Show in early April. Sold internationally, the Auris is offered with three engine options including two diesel variants and a turbocharged 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine. The Auris is also available with a hybrid powertrain. It's unclear if any of those powertrains will make it to the US market.

Design-wise, the Toyota product isn't expected to transform radically when it arrives on our shores as a Scion. The Toyota product sports sharp wing-like headlights, LED accents and daytime running lights and a lower grille that spans the width of the front bumper. Inside the car has a dashboard design that's reminiscent of the Toyota Corolla. Clean and simple, the cabin uses soft touch materials to help deliver a more upscale feel.

One of the more significant upgrades to the 2015 Auris is with the suspension and steering, which are said to improve ride comfort, handling and driver engagement. Toyota also took measures to reduce the amount of sound and vibrations in the cabin.
